For thousands of years, herbal medicinal products have played an important role in the social health care system. They are used either for the treatment of diseases or for the preventive and promotive purposes. Their use has been increasingly spread throughout social strata that might be due to their therapeutic efficacy and safety. The systematic study of herbal medicinal products, including their standardization, quality control, mode of action, molecular drug interactions, and clinical application have emerged as one of the most exciting developments in modern therapeutics and medicine.
Medical scientists have come to admit herbal products as drugs that are different from their pharmacologically active principles. Several clinical studies have proved that these herbal medicines have therapeutic efficacy equivalent with that of chemotherapeutic agents and have the advantage of being devoid of serious adverse effects. Furthermore, developments in molecular biology have made us possible to understand the mechanism of action of herbal medicines, which differ in some respects from that of synthetic drugs or single chemical entities. On the other hand, research in drug discovery from medicinal plants which involves a multifaceted approach continues to provide new and important leads against various pharmacological targets. Numerous compounds with potential activity for many kinds of diseases including cancer and HIV/AIDs have been discovered.
This seminar with the theme of “Herbal Medicines: Indigeneous, Molecular Aspects, and Clinical Application” will offer a comprehensive understanding of utilization of herbal medicines viewed from various points of knowledge. The topics will cover several aspects of herbal medicines, among other things, those associated with their traditional use, chemical analysis, biological activity, mode of action, and biomedical application.
This scientific forum is aimed to discuss views and current research findings of herbal medicines and establish links to lead our steps to the right direction in utilizing and developing natural potentials for the sake of human health and well-being.
