Students from FMIPA Unpad Won at National Competition at the ITB and UNJ

[Unpad.ac.id, 27/09/2016] Students from Mathematics Department Unpad won in two national level competitions. Achievement is scored in the event Mathematical Challenge Festival-Mathematics Modelling Competition 2016 (MCF-MMC 2016) held in Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) and Calculus Cup event held in Jakarta State University (UNJ). Two competitions are both held on Saturday (24/9).

In the MCF-MMC in 2016, students won the first prize in the category of modelling with the topic “Reducing Congestion at Crossroads Effectively”, and the second prize in the same category on the topic “Portfolio Stock Options”. First prize was won by a team of Alvin Willio, Diska Armenia, and Decky Dendi Dharmaperwira, while the second prize was won by a team of Christiawanta, Wandiansyah and Rico Fernando.

When interviewed by Unpad PR, Tuesday (27/09), Diska said that the team proposed a solution based on empirical experiences at a crossroads. By using a special stop space (ruang henti khusus-RHK) model for motorcycles, the team calculated the effectiveness based on the number of vehicles occupied at RHK at the crossroads, as well as the estimated waiting time at intersections.

As a result, RHK is an effective solution to break the bottlenecks that often occur at intersections. This simple modelling result beat 15 teams from several universities in Indonesia.

As for stock portfolio options modelling, Rico explained that his team did a reasonable pricing for financial products in financial derivatives. “We determine the fair price for the stock options being sold,” said Rico.

Rico and the team created a portfolio to determine the proportion of the put option and call option on a stock. This proportion is determined based on various conditions that may occur. In such a determination, the team uses binomial and black scholes models.

“Two of these models are mathematical models that use the opportunity and pay attention to the volatility of the data. With regard to the data, we can determine the fair price, “said Rico.

At the Calculus Cup, team of Yulian Zifar Ayustira, Indra Herdiana, and Alvin Willio won the third prize. The competition is calculus test joined by 110 teams from various universities throughout Indonesia.

Yulian said that there were three stages of Calculus Cup. The first one was the team should join the regional level selection. In this stage, the team must complete the entire tests that had been prepared by the committee.

“The difficulties of this phase is the fast time and that some tests are in English,” Indra said.

From this stage, 20 selected teams participated in the semi-finals. At this stage, teams were required to solve problems in some places. The team managed to qualify into the big 5 for the final competition.

Furthermore, Yulian said that, in the final race, the team must face trivia quiz and presentation. In the final stage, the Unpad team competed with two teams from ITB, one team from ITS, and 1 team from UIN Sunan Gunung Jati.

“We did not expect to be the third winner,” said Indra.

With these achievements in the two competitions, the delegation said that they were proud to be able to present achievements to the alma mater. “We want to contribute to Unpad before graduating,” said Christiawanta. *
