“This anniversary is a good momentum for many institutions, as well as for Universitas Padjadjaran for self-reflection on what has been achieved, self-evaluation as an act of gratitude, as well as for improvements in the future,” said Rector, Prof. Tri Hanggono Achmad, on the 59th anniversary celebration at Grha Sanusi Hardjadinata Unpad, Wednesday (14/09).

Rector also cited the speech from the first President of the Republic of Indonesia, Ir. Sukarno at the 2nd Dies Natalis of Universitas Padjadjaran in 1959. In his speech, Ir. Sukarno said, “Saja doakan Padjadjaran benar-benar memenuhi ia punya dharma, benar-benar menjadi salah satu tempat dimana api unggun Indonesia selalu bersinar, menjala-njala” or “I wish Padjadjaran will fully fulfil its dharma, to become one of the places where Indonesian bonfire will always burn.”

According to the Rector, the statement implied that Unpad was established with the noble and deeply meaningful aim. Its existence is expected to be one of the torch luminaries and supporting the progress of the nation.

“The inspiring speech also implies that Universitas Padjadjaran should be able to work not only at national level, but more than that, it can contribute to bring the potential of the Indonesian people globally,” said Rector.

Furthermore, the Rector said the 59-year journey had showed dedication and commitment of the founders, pioneers, and forerunners in the determination and efforts to achieve these ideals. “The dedication and commitment will always be an inspiration and energy for us to keep the spirit burning in facing challenges of the future,” said Rector.

On the occasion, Rector said that one of the things that Unpad has carried out is to develop transformative education, working for a variety of activities in higher education for the benefit of society. Through transformative education, the learning process will provide the opportunities for all participants to be more reflective and critical, more opening up to another perspective, and receptive to new ideas, or ideas believed to be essential for life in the future.

In addition, Unpad is also working to improve the quality of research. Quality researches will affect the quality of learning process.”Research activities in higher education are a necessity,” said Rector.

The ability to develop quality and interdisciplinary research and quality is an identifier of the third generation universities in the 21st century. Universities are expected to perform as a knowledge hub, not only as a knowledge factory, which is the identifier of second generation universities or a storehouse of knowledge that identifies first generation universities. In connection with this concept, Universitas Padjadjaran is working to be able to transform into a part of the third generation universities.

“As a hallmark of the third generation universities, researches must be conducted not solely for the development of science, but also for uses and benefits to the wider community,” said Rector. *
