Prof. Armida S. Alisjahbana was Elected as Executive Secretary of the UNESCAP

[unpad.ac.id, 09/14/2018] Professor of the Faculty of Economics and Business, Unpad, Prof. Dr. Armida Alisjahbana was appointed by the United Nations (UN) as the 11th Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP).

Quoted from the UN official website, Thursday (9/13), Prof. Armida also serves as the coordinator of five United States regional commissions.

The position of Executive Secretary was obtained by the recommendation of the UN Secretary General for the UN General Assembly Antonio Guterres. The election of Prof. Armida replaced Shamshad Akhtar as the previous Executive Secretary.

This position is equivalent to a cabinet minister in a member country.

Prof. Armida is an important figure in the founding of the center of excellent of Unpad SDGs Center, the first center of study in universities that focuses on strengthening the SDGs. The center which was established in 2016 is instrumental in the preparation and evaluation of policies and programs to achieve the SDGs. The center also inspired other universities in Indonesia to establish similar ones.

In the field of government, Prof. Armida had served as Minister of National Planning and Development / Head of Bappenas in 2009 until 2014.

At the appointment, Prof. Arminda will continue the mission of achieving SDGs at the international level. Through UNESCAP, it will promote inclusive and sustainable economic and social development in the Asia-Pacific. UNESCAP along with government organizations and other UN entities will also strengthen institutional capacity to serve rights, address the aspirations, and community needs.
