[unpad.ac.id, 06/19/2019] QS ranking agency released ranking data “QS World University Rankings (WUR) 2020” on Wednesday (19/6). University of Padjadjaran won rankings in the range 751-800.

The QS WUR 2020 assessment methodology still refers to a number of indicators, including: academic reputation (40%), employer reputation (10%), student faculty (20%), citations per faculty (20%), international faculty (5%), and international students (5%).

Unpad won the highest points on student faculty indicators. In this indicator, Unpad was ranked 366 at the global level. While the points that must be strengthened from these 6 indicators are internationalization which includes academic and employer peer reviews that have a large portion, in addition to international faculty and international students also need improvement (currently still ranked 601+).

Head of Unpad International Office, Dr. Ronny Lesmana, M.Kes., AIFO, PhD., explained that overall, Unpad’s cumulative achievements are not as good as in 2018. As a result, this year, Unpad’s ranking has decreased compared to last year.

The internationalization side is the affected side of the change in Unpad data on QS. The most affected criteria were in the faculty ratio, as well as the number of foreign students who experienced a decline in continuing their studies at Unpad.

Ronny explained, Unpad continued to strengthen in terms of data governance policies under the coordination of the Vice Chancellor for Governance, Planning and Information Systems. The efforts made are to encourage communication networks with international peers, namely partner universities, business communities and other stakeholders. What is done is to revive cooperation (MoU) with foreign institutions that were previously inactive or no activities, to the policy opening of the double degree program and international classes on undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programs.

Regarding internationalization, the readiness of the study program in welcoming foreign students will be very important, because the study program will determine how many foreign students can be accommodated. On the other hand, the support of adequate infrastructure also determines Unpad’s ability to accept foreign students.

Currently, continued Ronny, Unpad has the power of internationalization that has been running on the Indonesian language learning program at BIPA. The cooperation that has been carried out has also been running well with a number of institutions in Southeast Asia and other Asia. It’s just that more massive efforts must continue to be made.

“We have started to run faster. However, the other universities are running even faster, so we need to be more active in preparing for university performance. One thing that must not be forgotten, this internationalization side must also be done without forgetting the quality of education and the best service for domestic students, “said Ronny.

Another opinion conveyed by Prof. Badri Munir Sukoco, S.E., MBA., Ph.D., member of the World Class University Kemenristekdikti task force team, highlighted the importance of the individual role of academics. In addition to aspects of internationalization, the role of individual reputation from University academics to be able to improve academic reputation at international level is very important to boost indicators of academic reputation from the University.

“It needs awareness from academic individuals at the University about the importance of having a position that is recognized in the international community in their respective fields of expertise,” explained Badri.

Badri gives an illustration, if a lecturer has a position as a certain scientific association chair at the international level, then this will contribute to the recognition of the overall academic reputation of the institution. In addition, Badri also explained the importance of a number of leading international standard programs such as international conferences and collaborative research involving the international academic community to encourage academic reputation as one of the QS WUR criteria.

Acting Unpad Chancellor Prof. Dr. Rina Indiastuti, M. SIE., Appreciates all members of the community who have contributed to Unpad’s achievements in the QS WUR 2020 Ranking. Although Unpad’s ranking is adjusted, it is still in the top six universities in Indonesia. Rina also said that the number of international publications that continues to increase is a strong capital to increase the benefit and contribution of building the nation as well as Unpad’s internationalization.

“The downgrade of Unpad ordered that we have to work harder in building Unpad’s reputation and academic performance as did other universities which are Unpad peers,” Rina ordered.

Rina also stated that the high Unpad student faculty indicator must be determined to ensure the excellence of graduates to be absorbed in the world of work. This is further believed to bring confidence and increase the number of Unpad partners at the domestic and international level.

“I, along with the vice chancellors and deans, are planning to strengthen the quality of international standard study programs, collaborating with international partners. This can increase the academic reputation of lecturers and students, which will directly attract students and international students to come to Unpad,” said Rina. *
