Two universities in Fiji Islands have bonded a research collaboration with Universitas Padjadjaran. The collaboration was done in order to do joint research in agriculture, forestry, maritime, especially the one in Eastern Indonesia and Asia Pacific region, and also the democratic development in the region.

Two universities that are part of collaboration are University of South Pacific (USP) and Fiji International University (FNU). The collaboration was implemented through the signing of Letter of Intent between Unpad, USP and FNU during Unpad’s work visits to Suva, the capital of Fiji Islands on 8-10 November 2017 accompanied by the Director General of Asia Pacific and Africa from Foreign Affair Ministry, the Indonesian Republic Embassy in Suva.

In that occasion, Unpad was represented by The Director of Academic Collaboration and Corporation, Prof. Dr. Budi Setiabudiawan, dr., Sp.A(K)., M.Kes., and the Deputy of Research and Collaboration Center “Maluku Corner” Dr. Reginawanti Hindersah, Ir., M.P..

Prof. Budi explained that the research collaboration conducted in Asia Pacific region will see the involvement of “Maluku Corner” center. This was based upon the fact that the research center has been collecting numerous research programs, community service and series of collaboration in eastern Indonesia, which is located near the Asia Pacific Region.

The assignment of “Maluku Corner” as the coordinator of collaboration with two popular Fijian Universities are seen to be the perfect choice. “There are many similar natural characteristics between eastern Indonesia and the Pacific, including soil content and biodiversity,” Dr. Reginawanti mentioned in the press release wih Humas Unpad.

Meanwhile, the Research Director of USP, Prof. Jito Vanualailai, has been very welcomed to this international collaboration. This collaborations have been previously discussed by the researcher from three parties. “We are incredibly delightful to do this research collaboration,” Prof. Jito claimed.

Especially for USP, the university is part of the consortium of twelve countries in Pacific Island, which consists of Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Niue, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.

As for FNU, the university is a state-owned university in Fiji that specialized in agriculture, forestry, fishery and people community and business studies. These facts are the basis of the appointment of USP and FNU as Unpad’s partner in this research collaboration.
