Pidangan Seni Rumawat Padjadjaran December 2011 edition presents a dramatic reading of “Oedipus” by André Gide translated by Eka Kurniawan on Saturday, December 24 at 19.30 pm in Bale Rumawat Padjadjaran, Unpad, Jln. Dipati Ukur No. 35 Bandung. The performance is directed by Fathul A. Husein and event features actors and actresses from Actors Unlimited, namely Irwan Jamal, Mohamad Sunjaya and Ken Zuraida Rendra.

Synopsis

Oedipus is a story about crime disclosure. Once upon a time, on a journey, King Laius of Thebes was involved in a fight and killed. The murderer was unknown. Six months later, Thebes had a new king, Oedipus. A stranger and wanderer from Korinthius, he was the foster son of King Polybus, who ran away from the dark destiny prophesied on him that one day, he would kill his own father and marry his own mother and give her children. In Thebes, he was crowned as king and obtained the right to the Queen Yokasta, the widow of Laius for he managed to kill the Sphinx which had terrorized the people and made havoc in the city. After twenty years on the throne, Thebes was attacked by a deadly plague and a horrible disaster. As the people became uneasy, the priests, particularly Tiresias, through a vision revealed to them, offered a salvation. Thebes would be freed from the plague and disaster if the killer of Laius was found and punished. Oedipus the King accepted the condition. He appointed himself as both investigator and judge and vowed to find the murderer immediately. Eventually, everything was revealed. The murderer turned out to be no one but himself. He punished himself for the good of his people and the whole country. It was not his guilt that made him killed, but it was the power of destiny.
