class="wp-caption-text">The graduates taking oath (Photo: Tedi Yusup)*

“You have just taken the oath, which will be the basis of your profession. This is the final phase in your university education toward becoming a professional nurse. Therefore, this oath is substantial for you to become a responsible professional,” said Mamat in his speech before the senate, graduates, parents of the graduates, and other invitees.

According to Mamat, some important trends are now emerging in the world of nursing. The first is the increasing role of nurse in global society, particularly after the consensus of ASEAN countries in Mutual Recognition Arrangement of health services, constituting the arrangement proposed by the ASEAN member countries to facilitate the free movement of qualified and certified labor between country members. According to him, it will not be a surprise if there are foreign nurses serving in Indonesia and the other way.

“For instance, there have been many of our alumni serving abroad since 2000, such as Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Australia, and so on. This proves the globalization of this profession,” said Mamat.

Then, the next trend is the increasingly strict regulations regarding standards of nursing graduates, through test and registration of nursing competence. Thus, Mamat asked the nurses to demonstrate adequate performance, to attain the ability and skills that can be relied upon, so that people can accept and acknowledge their professionalism.

Furthermore, Mamat also said that the nurses should also be able to compete, demonstrate, and market their ability better. This is in accordance to what ASEAN marketing expert’s opinion that the era of marketing will come, so that professionals from all fields must be able to compete marketing themselves.

“May this inspire us, nurses, to market our profession, so that we will maintain it on the track of progress,” said he.

On the occasion, the Dean also gave awards to the best graduate with Professional GPA of 4.00, namely Rani Lathifah, S.Kep. In his report, Chairman of the Ners Oath Taking Committee, who is also Assistant Dean for Student Affairs of Unpad FIK, Hana Rizmadewi Agustina, S.Kp. M.N. said that of the 60 graduates, 27 students graduate cum laude and 33 graduated with very satisfactory predicate. *

Report by: Lydia Okva Anjelia | | | eh*

Dodi, the Office Boy who successfully graduated from Unpad

News
<guid

The Unpad Graduation Ceremony Batch II Academic Year 2011/2012 held last Wednesday (02/08) was probably the happiest moment of Dodi’s life. The man, also working as an office boy in Unpad, graduated from Diploma III Program, Financial Administration Department at Faculty of Social and Political Science (FISIP) Unpad.

When met after the Graduation Ceremony Session IV in Grha Sanusi Hardjadinata, Unpad Campus, Jln. Dipati Ukur No.35 Bandung, he happily Dodi claimed that, “I am glad that I finally graduated.”

Through a long road of struggle, he finally achieved ahli madya (equivalent to associate’s degree). Prior to his going to college in 2008, Dodi, born on October 8, 1986 in Sumedang, had been working as an office boy in Unpad General Administration Bureau since 2005.

“I have been working as an OB since 2005. Almost 7 years now. I went to DIII FISIP in 2008 and finished my study in 3 and a half years,” Dodi talked about his journey.

Working as an office boy, his is given responsibilities for sweeping floors, cleaning, photocopying documents, lining up the desks and chairs, and so on. He, after graduation from Madrasah Aliyah (Islamic High School), previously worked at Unpad Jatinangor in the on-field department of General Administration Bureau for one year. His moving to Unpad Dipati Ukur Bandung marked the time when he was first encouraged into continuing his study.

“Many people, especially the Head of Unpad Administration and Household Department, encouraged me to continue my study. Then I thought, if I had a chance, why not?” said Dodi who at first had not imagined that he could continue his study.

He paid the entrance fee to DII Program at FISIP Unpad which at that time was around IDR 9 millions using his own money and some amount of aid money. “I was also advised by the faculty about installment. My college fund was from my saving and aid money.”

“Since graduated from Madrasah Ibtidaiyah in 2004, I had no intention to go to college because I did not have the fund. When asked for permission to continue to study in college, my parents said that it was fine with them if I wanted to work and at the same time study in college as long as I could manage them properly. They also said that they could not help me with the tuition,” explained he, the second child of four of Uha (60) and Mien (50). With hard work, he was finally able to get scholarship fund in his second to fourth semester.

Coming from Jatinangor, Dodi was able to manage his time working as an OB and studying in Bandung. While he was in Bandung, he lived in Unpad DU Campus at the annexed building behind Grha Sanusi Hardjadinata.

“Usually after morning prayer, I went straight to work. If I had class at 8, I would first go to class then started working afterward. If I had class at 10, I would go to work before going to class. I had to finish work before going to class,” said he.

Dodi and his parents (Photo: Tedi Yusup)*

None of his friends knew about his job until the fourth semester. Dodi thought that he was fine with it. Moreover, he was very proud of his profession. “Only some of my friends knew about his, but later on, almost all knew. I am taking it easy, I’m not embarrassed at all working as an office boy,” explained he.

When asked about continuing to undergraduate program (S1), Dodi was not sure. “I had to know how much money I had to spend. College takes a great amount of money,” said Dodi, graduating with IPK of 2.74.

Dodi is still now working as an OB at Unpad Jatinangor Campus. Upon graduating from DIII Program, he is quite certain he can now do better to improve his quality of life, similar to what his parents had been expecting.

“Alhamdulillah, bungah (Sundanese: glad). I actually hope that Dodi could have a better job,” admitted Mien, Dodi’s mother.

Talking about what he wanted in the future, Dodi did not set his hope too high. He believed that there would be more opportunities available. “I hope to be able to make my parents happy and to be a useful person,” said he, smiling. He added that if you have had your degree but have yet to get a job, never ever thinking about quitting.

Report by: Lydia Okva Anjelia | | | eh*

Three Students Completed Undergraduate Degree in 3 Years 3 months

News
<guid

In Unpad, on the second batch graduation academic year 2011/2012, it was announced that three students completed their 4 year degree only within 3 years and 3 months. The students were Ramagaluh Airlangga and Hapsah Fauziah from Faculty of Arts (FIB), Qorrie Nurul Qisthi from Faculty of economics and Business (FEB).
<div

In my opinion, completing the study within 3 years instead of 6 years gives more benefits. I don’t have to pay for more tuitions and fees. I could get to put into practice all the knowledge I have, and what’s more, I could make my parents proud even more,” said Ramagaluh Airlangga in di Grha Sanusi Hardjadinata at Unpad Dipati Ukur Campus, on Wednesday (8/2).

Interviewed after the graduation ceremony, Rama and Hapsah admitted that they were pleased with the fact that they graduated in the shortest period, and the rector highly appreciated this. Rama, graduating with IPK 3.82, said that it was not that difficult.

“The main key is effort. Sometime we don’t need the whole semester to learn materials in a course. Plan your study so that you do not have to repeat a class. I complete the whole study in three years,” said the Arabic Department graduate.

Similarly, Hapsah Fauziah said that she was glad to be able finish her degree earlier. She thought that graduating faster would make, at least, her parents proud and enable her to implement all the knowledge she has had.

“When I entered Arabic Department for the first time, I was confused about what I would do after graduating. But as time goes by, I felt that studying in the department was enjoyable. And now, I am thinking about pursuing master’s degree overseas,” said the girl who graduated with GPA 3.66.

When asked about what she wanted to be, Hapsah firmly answered that she wanted to become Indonesian ambassador. Meanwhile, Rama, who was born in Cimahi August 30 1990, said he wanted to become the Foreign Minister or Minister of Education one day. “But for now, I would just go along with any profession as long as I can be useful to society,” said he.*

Report by: Lydia Okva Anjelia | | | eh*

Actively Involved in Student Organizations, Gina Ratnasari Maintains IPK of 3.95

News
<guid

Gina, graduate from Faculty of Animal Husbandry, was awarded as the graduate with the highest IPK (Cumulative Achievment Index—equivalent to GPA) of with 3.95. This achievement was earned through her hard work and supports from her family and friends.

Gina Ratnasari (Photo: Tedi Yusup)*

Born on September 3, 1990, Gina admitted that she found her future destination during her study in Unpad. Her interest in studying animal husbandry, particularly concerning cattle food and nutrition, has ensured her to have career in this potential matter. Although initially it was not her choice when entering college, she admitted that she never for once regretted it. She even thanked Allah SWT for bringing her to this major.

“I enjoy studying this, and finally I have come to know that this is where I am supposed to belong. Here, I could learn many lessons and philosophies of life. Apparently I found my future here. I will start my career in this field, either in scientific or agribusiness matters. I never regret this,” she said when interviewed after the graduation ceremony held at Unpad Dipati Ukur campus, Bandung, on Tuesday (02/07).

With all the supports from the parents, upon finishing her highschool at SMAN 1 Banjaran, Bandung Regency, Gina went to Unpad for she thought it was one of a well-qualified and renowned university in Indonesia, what’s more the campus quite near from where she lived. Gina admitted that she did not meet many obstacles during her study here. All supports from her family and friends helped her achieve this success.

“No significant obstacle I faced while studying here. It was a little bit difficult in the beginning. But I somehow I could make it due to the supports that I received. In addition, I knew my objective, so, no matter how hard it was, I could make it through,” she stated.

Gina defined her graduation as the award for all students for having given their greatest toils to study. It was proper if the graduation ceremony was seen as a celebration for achieving the finish line in studying in Unpad.

“This is truly something to be proud of for my parents, moreover since I could graduate sooner. They are extremely happy and hoped that this would bring me to my future success. They believe that Unpad graduates are well considered everywhere,” she added.

Gina was known as a student actively involved in both academic and organizational activities. She was active in Animal Husbandry Student Union in the Education Division and Student Executive Body (BEM). As of today, Gina is still active in the poultry farming professional organization. Her best achievement was when she was elected representative as the best student from Faculty of Animal Husbandry, Unpad.

“Organizational activities somehow induced my self-confidence for by being active has let me recognize my own capabilities. The more we interact with people, the better we improve and evaluate ourselves,” said Gina, who had been a teaching assistant during her study.

Both her friends, Teguh Nurdiantri and Trisnia, also felt proud of her. They attended the ceremony to accompany her. They were excited abou her success. They hoped that Gina could achieve more success in her future.

“I am proud of Gina. I am glad to see that she is successful. She deserves to be the pride of everyone. I wish she could be more successful and earn the best in her life,” hoped Teguh.*

Report by: Malikkul Shaleh | eh* | translated by aad

Ideal Students Are the Actors of Change

News

The Rector of Unpad congratulates one of the 2,305 graduates at the Graduation Ceremony Batch II Academic Year 2011/2012 (Photo: Tedi Yusup)*

In his speech, the Rector, Prof. Ganjar Kurnia, congratulated the graduates for their success. According to him, this ceremony is the highest point of the learning process a student undergoes in his/her department. Furthermore, the rector had the students extend their gratitude to those who made their success possible. The proper expressions were being dutiful to the parents by putting into practice the knowledge they have in the society and continuing study for the rest of their lives for the nature of education is basically a process of intellectual empowerment. Graduation does not mean the end of learning.

“Ideally, graduates could make actors of change. For hesitation to change would lead someone to be crushed by the change itself. We should not be diigelkeun zaman (Sundanese: played by the era), the least we could do is to ngigelan zaman (Sundanese: playing with the era), however the best is to ngigelkeun zaman (Sundanese: lead the era),” said he.

On the occasion, the rector also expressed his wish for the graduates to be pioneers of honesty since they were now the representatives of the university. When they did well, they would be remembered well. Doing otherwise would bring a bad name for them and the university. Not one university in this world ever taught their pupils to be dishonest people.

“When you succeed, the alma mater would accordingly be deemed good. When you fail or even get involved in a case inflicting the interest of the country, people would ask where did you graduate from,” continued he.

Representing the graduates, Risman Adhitiya from Faculty of Geological Engineering Unpad stated that after a long period of searching, recognizing, and developing self-potentials during their study in Unpad, it was time for him together with his friends finally enter the real world. It was an honor for the Unpad graduates to be given new mandate to be part of the best servants for the nation.

“Let us keep learning, train ourselves, and stay thirsty of knowledge to improve our intellectuality. Let us be the people who are not afraid of fighting. Let us fulfill the mandate as a part of Unpad for God, the nation, and the beloved alma mater,” said he.

The rector also specially congratulated the graduates with the highest Grade Point Average (IPK), the graduates with earliest graduation, the oldest graduate, and the youngest graduate.

Graduates with highest IPK were Mohammad Taufik (Physics Concentration Doctorate Program at Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, IPK 4,00), Tatang Sopian ( Master’s Program at Faculty of Medicine, IPK 3,99), Fahmi Oscandar (Specialist Program at Faculty of Dentistry Science, IPK 3,99), Belly Sam (Specialist Program at Faculty of Child Dentistry, IPK 3,93), Rani Latifah (Profession Program at Faculty of Nursing, IPK 3,90).

Graduate with highest IPK from the Undergraduate Program was Gina Ratnasari (Faculty of Animal Husbandry, IPK 3,95), from Diploma III Program was Angga Rizky Pratama (Faculty of Economics and Business, IPK 3,61). With 3 years 3 months study period, Qorri Nurul Qisthi (Faculty of Economics and Business), Ramagaluh Airlangga and Hapsah Fauziah (Faculty of Cultural Sciences) from the Undergraduate Program were graduates with earliest graduation.

The youngest graduate for Undergraduate Program was Mitra Eviani from Faculty of Nursing, graduated at 20 years 1 month old. Sri Astuti Buchari, 71 years 2 months old, from Sociological Science was the oldest graduate for Doctorate Program. Kirana Lina Gunawan, 58 years 7 months old, from Basic Medical Science was the oldest for Master’s Program.*

Report by: Malikkul Shaleh | | | eh*

Having good research performance, Unpad is Categorized as Independent Research University by Dikti

News
<guid

Present in the event were the rector, the head of LPPM, Prof. Oekan S. Abdoellh, M.A., PhD., deans, lecturers, and researchers in Unpad.

This becomes Unpad’s own pride since to be categorized as independent research university, a university must have a good research performance. At the same time, it has also become a challenge for Unpad to maintain the title and avoid lower rank. In addition to research decentralization, it is expected that Unpad has advanced quality and research competitiveness with other universities. According to Prof. Lili, the spirit of decentralization should be considered as encouragement to improve both the quality and quantity of research so that, apart from academic impact, the research can be more applicable for the society. Lecturers and researchers are the main actors.

“Research paradigm nees changing. We now not only focuses on academic impact but also social impact for the society by means of Intellectual Property Rights, publications, and prototype model. We can clearly see what the vocational high school students have invented. It is a challenge for us,” said he.

Research decentralization is basically the gradual handing in of responsibility and research management to the universities. The purpose of this process is to create research advantage, increase university competitivenes in doing research, and improve the participations of lecturers in research, and also better the research development capacity in universities.

“It is now almost 76 percent of the total budget. The amount will graduatlly increase. We have targeted that in 2014 the budget would reach IDR 4 billion. Decentralization is expected to create better results,” added he.

In implementing this new policy, Dikti via Research Directorate and Community Service (DP2M) will be assisted by research bodies in every university. LPPM Unpad, in this case, will be the agency that has the authority in organizing research in Unpad, particularly in funding.

“The idea is basically to improve our capability of doing quality research. We now have been categorized as independent. We have to figure out strategies in maintaining it,” said Prof. Oekan when interviewed after the event.

Report by: Malikkul Shaleh | | | eh*

Unpad Students to Participate in Harvard National MUN in Boston

News

Prof. Emil Salim delivering his speech in EAAERE 2011 Congress in Unpad Campus (Photo: Tedi Yusup).

The event has been officially opened by the Dean of Faculty of Economics and Business, Prof. Ernie Tisnawati Sule, in Grha Sanusi Hardjadinata, Unpad Campus, on Friday (03/02). Opening speeches were from President of EAAERE, Prof. Kazuhiro Ueta, former Minister of Environment of the Republic of Indonesia, Prof. Emil Salim, environmental economist, Prof. Thomas Sterner from Gothenburg University, Sweden, and Dr. Arief Anshory Yusuf, the head of the organizing committee of EAAERE 2012. The participants are researchers, professionals, policy makers, and international organizations delegations.

When giving the keynote speech, Prof. Emil argues that sustainable development has been promoted since decades ago but finds a dead end or fails. This was due to the fact that it was still oriented on economic without social environmental perspectives in practice.

“Why is it so difficult to integrate? It is apparently because the objective is divided into many sectors both in global level and national level. Each sector has its own interest without any consideration on social and environmental contexts,” says he.

In his opinion, the fact that EAAERE 2012 is now on the run is the right moment to seriously and critically evaluate present development in order to get a big picture of how to make a little change in the future.

“This moment covers more than a congress. We are going to set a new direction of sustainable development here. We share a common hope. I see the opportunity of achieving sustainable development here,” says he.

The head of organizing committee of EAAERE 2012, Arief Anshory, shows similar expectation. He has hopes that the event will help Indonesian people, particularly economist, to change their economic-centric perspective to the very perspective that considers social and environmental aspects in determining development goals.

“Green economy has been much promoted. But is it an unrealistic vigor? The fact shows that sustainable development is far from being successful. We have to revitalize our economic perspective by putting social and environmental aspects into it,” said he.

For the next two days, until Saturday (2/4), hundreds of participants are going to discuss their pieces of research on major issues, such as climate change, development and environment, food and agriculture, government, land and water, mining and energy, policy instruments, pollution and recycling, and renewable energy.*

Report by: Malikkul Shaleh | | | eh*

Unpad and UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Signed the Memorandum of Understanding

News
<guid
