Universitas Padjadjaran’s Faculty of Medicine (Fakultas Kedokteran, or FK) was established based on two main philosophies, becoming beneficial for the community and upholding togetherness in fellowship. The idea to establish faculties of medicine in Indonesia came first from the then Minister of Health, dr. Lie Kiat Teng, at the 1953 IDI Congress in Surabaya. With the founding of Universitas Padjadjaran based on Government Regulation Number 37 of 1957, the Faculty of Medicine was established alongside three others, making up the first iteration of Universitas Padjadjaran. Adhering to the development of knowledge and technology in medicine, a postgraduate education program was established in 1979. Then, in 2006, the Faculty opened a doctorate program for medicine which was done in collaboration with Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia’s Faculty of Medicine, proving its international recognition.

FK implements the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) method by applying a Student-centered, Problem-based, Community-oriented, Early clinical exposure, Systematic (SPICES) concept. The method is expected to produce medical students who are able to keep improving and easily adapt to problems without depending on lecturers and institutions. SPICES in the curriculum is applied to push students’ interests in learning and to train their mindset. The curriculum integrates clinical and preclinical instruction and early introduction to clinical study in the form of study cases and training on models or patients.

Currently, the Faculty of Medicine is focusing on efforts to develop its programs and facilities within the context of advancing internationalization, strengthening research and innovation, and improving the healthcare of the community, especially in West Java. The main goal for FK is to break through into the top 500 ranking in the Life Sciences and Medicine category of the QS World University Rankings.
