Performing Indonesian traditional culture, Unpad students earns the predicate of “the most popular culture” at the Zakopane Festival in Poland

[Unpad.ac.id, 16/09] As many as 30 students of Universitas Padjadjaran participated in the world’s class festival and competition, Zakopane Festival of High Land Folklore, in Zakoane, Poland, on August 23 until September 5 this year. The event was organized by CIOFF Poland, a cultural organization working under UNESCO.


The 30 student come from various faculties in Universitas Padjadjaran, among which are Faculty of Geological Engineering, Faculty of Psychology, Faculty of Economics and Business, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Social and Political SciencesFaculty of Psychology, Faculty of Economics and Business, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Faculty of Arts, and the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, joined together in a group called Pasir Putih. They have prepared for ths performance since the end of December of 2012.

In the event, they performed various cultural dance and music items from all over the country, such as Bajidor Kahot dance from West Java, Nandak Ganjen from DKI Jakarta, Tifa dance from Maluku, Lontar dance from West Nusa Tenggara, Terimpung dance from West Sumatera, Saman dance from Aceh, and Janger dance from Bali. In addition, they also showed their proficiency in playing traditional musical instruments.

Met at Padjadjaran University Faculty of Engineering Geology, Jody Pratama (Geology, 2010), chairman of the White Sand in 2013 said that the event was attended by 14 countries, and Indonesia is the only representative from Asia. Although Romania is lined up to the jury as the winner, but the Indonesian contingent was awarded as The Most Popular Culture. It implies that our culture has been recognized by other nations in the world and is a challenge for us to continue to preserve indigenous peoples

“It is a pleasure to have the chance to introduce Indonesian culture to the world,” expressed Jodi proudly. Ho hopes that in the future the younger generation would follow his step by participating in such a festival in order to preserve and promote our culture to the world.
