Empowering Tanjungsari Tailor, Students Turned Used Jeans Into Cool Bags

[Unpad.ac.id, 15/06/2016] Most people usually disposed used jeans. But in the hands of six students of Social Welfare Science Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) Universitas Padjadjaran, used jeans can be transformed into new and more useful products.

1465135739489Yana Safitri, Elmaghfira Putri Elika, Mutiara Mardina, Ramadhani Arya Putra, Vania Kemala Hastuti, and Salsabila Wahyu Hadianti are under one business units that transformed used jeans into a variety of bags under the trade name of “Kumble Store”. Unlike the other jeans bag, they also added a distinctive motif archipelago on their products.

“We are social enterpise green, using the concept of recycling, transforming old or used jeans into a bag with diverse variations. Our models are also very creative with a variety of forms, “Yana said during the interview Unpad Public Space, Rectorate Building Jatinangor, Tuesday (14/06).

In addition to various forms of bags, Kumble Store also accepted custom order from consumers with appropriate models from the consumers. By using secondhand jeans, from consumers themselves or come from secondhand jeans provided by Kumble Store. Kumble Store also opened the opportunity for those to volunteer and contribute secondhand jeans.

Kumble store emphasized on benefit rather than profit. According to them, disposing secondhand jeans waste would required a long time to process. Stasrting from the idea of caring about environment, they also want used jeans to be processed into products that can be reused.

“By throwing them away, it would involve long process of dissolution and can cause pollution,” said Mutiara.

In addition to the love for the environment, they use this business unit to empower the youth in the village Rancabawang, Tanjungsari, Sumedang regency. Youth in the village are employed as tailor for Kumble Store.

Through Kumble Store, these students are also trying to educate the public unused material around us could be transformed into new items. “Everyone can apply recycle concept,” said Yana.

This business has been forged since July 2015, starting from a task of their Social Entrepreneurship class. This effort kept on flourishing until now. They are also actively participating in various entrepreneurship events. In addition to the direct sales, they are also accepting online bookings through LINE @ rpt3627a and Instagram @ kumblestore. *
