[Unpad.ac.id, 3/08/2016] Many people assume that Environmental Science is limited to natural sciences. However Environmental Science is a multidisciplinary science that also had connections to social sciences.
“I want to spread the knowledge ‘virus’ of environmental science as multidisciplinary view of various aspects, with no limit. This is the viewpoint I am trying to make known now. That environmental science is not confined to natural sciences, but also involving social system in close relations, “said Lara Gemilang Utama Saripudin when met at PR Unpad Room, Jln. Dipati Ukur No. 35 Bandung, Tuesday (2/08).
Gemilang, or Gilang, is the first Doctor in Environmental Sciences of Graduate School Unpad who attended the Wave IV Graduation Ceremony Academic Year 2015/2016 session II, Tuesday (2/08). Gilang graduated as a doctor after studying for 4 years with a GPA of 4.00.
Gilang’s expectation is in line with what Unpad is currently doing. “We want this environmental science to contain all the science that could ultimately encourage the advancement of human life,” he hoped.
Gilang graduated with a dissertation entitled “Analysis of Yeast Using Indigenous in Bioconversion Whey Cheese and Vegetable Waste into Bioethanol, and Its Socioeconomic and Environmental Benefits”. This work is consistent with scientific roots which he was involved, of food microbiology.
“With my dissertation, superiority of the local microorganism, i.e. indigenous yeast derived from cheese and vegetable waste isolated to overcome problems of cheese and vegetable waste itself, to produce ethanol (a renewable fuel source),” said Gilang is also a lecturer in Faculty of Agricultural Industrial Technology (FTIP), Universitas Padjadjaran.
In his research, acting as members promoter team were Prof. DVM. Roosita L. Balia. M. App. Sc., Ph.D., Dr. Tb. Benito A. Kurnani, Ir. Dip. Est., and Sunardi, M.Si, Ph.D.
The research on yeast and waste has been Gilang’s focus since he was studying Masters in Environmental Science in Universitas Padjadjaran. “This continues from my graduate thesis putting forward consolidation and optimization,” said the man who was born in Bandung, October 20, 1984.
The results of this research was published in an international journal, International Journal on Advance Science, Engineering and Information Technology in 2016, with the title of a scientific article “The Isolation and Identification of Stress Tolerance Ethanol-fermenting Yeasts from Mozzarella Cheese Whey”.
Gilang considered this graduation is due to the support of all parties, including the promoter team, family, and faculty. “I am very happy, especially with the many support. I could have not achieved this if it were not for many people who have encouraged me. I feel that this is the result of hard work from everyone, “said Gilang.*
