The three students are Bugi Irawan, Mutiara Ananda, and Novi Fitriani. At the same time, they also followed a similar competition in the event LKTIN Biology Opens Day I (Body I) held by Makassar State University (UNM). In competition at UNM, all three managed to be a finalist along with 9 teams from 10 universities throughout Indonesia.

On activities in Unhas, Bugi and friends submitted a paper entitled “Use of Microalgae Strain Botrycoccus braunii Against Lipid Rich and BOD as effort to Improve Dairy Cattle Liquid Waste”. They had to compete with 8 teams from 5 universities throughout Indonesia.

Muti said the paper raised the idea in the form of utilization of microalgae to reduce levels of Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) in the wastewater of dairy cows. Excess use of this micro algae is to be produced into biodiesel, an alternative fuel or fuel oil.

Furthermore Bugi explained that the liquid waste is one of the crucial issues in the livestock sector, therefore it is necessary to minimize the level of damage caused by waste. Microalgae is one effective agent to minimize it. At harvest time, the microalgae could then be extracted into biodiesel.

“At one time when we run out of fuel, the microalgae could be used as an alternative fuel,” said Bugi when interviewed PR Unpad, Monday (7/11).

Starting from the collection of papers, all three passed the grand final at Hasanuddin University. After making a presentation before the judges, the three won second place followed the team from the University of North Sumatra in 1st place and the hosts in 3rd place.

Bugi, Muti, and Novi also became finalists of the grand final of LKTIN Body I at UNM. At UNM, the trio excelled in the education category with papers related to the idea of making the curriculum waste treatment as part of environmental education for students SMA/SMK.

“At UNM, we are very much appreciated, because we’re on the basic science but it can go into the category of education,” Novi added.

After Makassar, the three went straight to LKTIN held directly following the Faculty of Animal Husbandry, Universitas Padjadjaran on October 24 to 26. In the activity held as Anniversary of Animal Husbandry Unpad, the three submitted a paper entitled “Influence of Utilization Flax Leaf and Leaf Jotang fermented horse Added Body Weight Against the New Zealand White Rabbit”. In this case, Bugi, Muti, and Novi won the third championship.

Winning in several competitions is a true pride for Bugi, Novi, and Muti. Bugi said that these competitions also prove to strengthen of Unpad in the national arena. *
