The Faculty of Medicine (FK) in Unpad was established based two main philosophies, which are both to become beneficial for the community and to uphold togetherness in equality. The idea to establish faculties of medicine in Indonesia came first from the then ministry of health, dr. Lie Kiat Teng, at the 1953 IDI Congress in Surabaya. Alongside the founding of Universitas Padjadjaran (Government Regulation Number 37 of 1957), the Faculty of Medicine was established as well as three other faculties. Along with the development of knowledge and technology in medicine, a postgraduate education program in medicine was established in 1979.
Since 2001, FK Unpad has begun to open English Instruction Classes by accepting foreign students, especially from Malaysia. Then, in 2006, the Faculty opened a doctorate program for medicine which was done in collaboration with Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia’s Faculty of Medicine, proving its international recognition.
The Faculty has implemented Problem Based Learning (PBL) method by applying a Student-centered, Problem-based, Community-oriented, Early clinical exposure, Systematic (SPICES) concept. The method is trusted to produce medical staffs who are able to keep improving and to easily adapt to problems without depending on lecturers and institutions. SPICES in the curriculum is applied to push students’ interests in learning and to train their mindset. The curriculum integrates clinical and preclinical studies, and early introduction to clinical study in the form of study cases and training skills on models or patients.
