More than 300 students cannot register for the new semester due to insufficient IPK

[Unpad.ac.id, 16/08/2013] Unpad is now setting a stricter regulation on students accumulative achievement index (IPK) equivalent to GPA. Students with IPK lower than 2.00 on a 4.00 IPK scale will not be allowed to log into the integrated academic information system (SIAT), thus, cannot register for the upcoming semester.

The vice rector for learning and student affairs, Engkus Kuswarno, said that students with IPK of 2.00 or lower will be given strong warning for they are very likely to be dismissed from campus.

“When it was still manually operated, the mechanism ran 2 months prior to registration period. Students with higher IPK would then be listed and verified for registration. However, some faculties submitted the list rather late. So, many students passed registration process despite their low IPK” said Kuswarno when interviewed at Bale Sawala on Friday (16/08).

Now, the mechanism is automatically operated via SIAT which will directly read the IPK each student has and block those with poor IPK to do online registration. When blocked, they have to make a request to their respective study program heads, have them verified, advised, and then be given permission to register.

“For some cases, members of board of advisors together with deans, and heads of study programs will reconvene and discuss the likelihood for the students to continue their study. So, all decisions are collectively made,” Kuswarno added.

This regulation is based on an alarming finding from the directorate general for higher education that observed many 7th semester students or higher with IPK of 2 or lower were still allowed to go to class. Unpad academic guidelines state that such students must be expelled following written warning from the university. If warning has not been made, then it is not the student’s fault.

Based on data collected by the Subdivision of Selection and Registration, Learning and Student Affairs Bureau, there are more than 300 students of D3 and S1 programs are not allowed to register due to their poor IPK. “We’re not trying to be unfair to the students, we are just giving emphasis on the importance of achievement index,” said Kuswarno. What’s more, students can still have make a request to be reevaluated and receive advising prior to academic registration.
