[Unpad.ac.id, 18/11/2013] Issues on agribusiness have led to the importance of complexity and system sciences approaches in understanding national agribusiness phenomenon and development. This was discussed in a national seminar titled “The Implementation of System and Complexity Sciences in the Development of National Agribusiness” organized the Laboratory of Agribusiness, Department of Social and Economic Agriculture, Faculty of Agriculture Universitas Padjadjaran at Bale Sawala Unpad Jatinangor, Saturday (16/11).

The seminar was opened by Vice Rector of Human Resources, Facilities and Infrastructures, and Management, Prof. Dr. H. Roni Kastaman, and there were more than 200 participants from government, business, farming industries, banking, and education from all over the country.
Head of Presidential Unit of Supervision and Control of Development, Prof. Dr. Kuntoro Mangkusubroto, when giving his key note speech, explained the role of holistic decision approach in debottlenecking various complex issues in the development of national food system. It deals with the integrity of agricultural system, food distribution and logistics, along with options of pro-farmer and pro-consumer policies.

In the panel discussion, Managing Director of PT. Sewu Segar Nusantara, the company producing Sunpride, Martin M. Widjaja talked about the opportunities, challenges, and strategies in national fruit and vegetable distribution and sale. Meanwhile, Zaldy Ilham Masita, the Head of Indonesia’s Logistic Association (ALI) spoke about the lack of attention from the government in national agricultural logistic system. As the representative from the government, Nono Rusono (Director of Food and Agriculture National Development Planning Agency) presented guidelines for national agribusiness policies in the development of competitiveness capacity before the implementation of ASEAN Economic Community 2015. Unpad lecturer, Tomy Pradana presented the implementation of system and complexity sciences in the development of vegetable supply system involving small farmers to fulfill the demand in export and modern retail.
Partnership
At the same event, an agreement for partnership between Universitas Padjadjaran and PT. Sewu Segar Nusantara and Indonesia’s Logistic Association was concluded. Unpad and PT. Sewu Segar Nusantara came to an agreement to develop fruit and vegetable supply system for domestic market demand. Meanwhile, Unpad and ALI reached a conclusion for partnership in development of agricultural logistic system. Both forms of partnership will be implemented in the improvement of human resources capacity and applied researches.
In parallel session, 50 academicians and agribusiness entrepreneurs presented a number of research findings in agribusiness. This seminar is expected to be an annual event as a contribution in the development of national agribusiness competitiveness.
