“The results show that M. Jumhur Hidayat is the most popular West Javanese figure,” said Head of P2KS Dr. Toni Toharudin, M.Sc., at the press conference of “West Javanese Figures in National Leadership,” Thursday (26/12) at Victoria Bakery and Café Jalan Dipatiukur, Bandung.

Hidayat, being the Head of National Body on the Placement and Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (BNP2TKI), has been selected by the people of West Java based on his active engagement on the country’s labors and migrant workers issues with 16.82% of popularity.

Other prominent names showing up in the survey include MS. Hidayat (14.18%), Helmi Faisal (13.36%), Armida Alisyahbana (12.16%), Pangeran Arief (11.22%), Syarief Bastaman (10.21%), TB. Hasanudin (7.75%), and Yudhi Crisnandi (7.37 %). Dr. Toharudin concluded that there are significant potential and readiness among the people to support the future national leader from West Java. However, compared to those national figures from non-Sundanese culture such as Joko Widodo, Abu Rizal Bakrie, and Jusuf Kalla, West Javanese figures as Hidayat and Bastaman only place the last two ranks with 19.72 % and 16.82 % of popularity respectively.

Hidayat earned 1.20% and Bastaman came with 0.10% on the survey for potential President and Vice President for the 2014 Election, which shows a huge difference with the most popular one recently, Joko Widodo with 47.10%. “There were only 44.36 respondents who voted for West Javanese figures,” said Dr. Toharudin.

Political observer and official of Sundanese Forum (Bamuss), Colonel (Ret.) Herman Ibrahim said that the results of the survey show that strong confidence and trust are needed for the the Sundanese figures to step up in national leadership.

A Sundanese figure, Andri Kantaprawira expressed the similar opinion, adding that figures such as Otto Iskandardinata and Ahmad Wiranatakusumah have been participated in encouraging the rise of Indonesian leaders, and it is the time for Sundanese leaders to speak more in political stage.
