To Treat Patients of Cleft Lip and Palate, Distribution of Oral Surgeons in Indonesia Is Required

[Unpad.ac.id, 18/04/2016] Indonesia becomes one of the countries in South East Asia with the highest number of cleft lip and palate patients. Understanding of the importance of surgery among patients has not yet been realized.

“We support this fully, yet the biggest challenge is human capital,” said Rektor Unpad Prof. Tri Hanggono Achmad during the opening of “Indonesian Oromaxillofacial Cleft Workshop” in Aula 3rd Floor Building C Dental and Oral Hospital FKG Unpad Complex, Jln. Sekeloa Selatan No. 1, Bandung, Monday (18/04).

Strengthening of oral surgeon personnel capacity became significant step to overcome cleft lip problem. Rector said that more important than the existing oral surgeons was the distribution of resources so that they can reach out to all corners of the region.

In addition to distribution, Rector said it was also important for workers in all sectors to be able preventive dental health awareness on the issue. “Cleft lip and palate is not only a problem for oral surgeons but also involving all dentists in being able to do prevention, “said Rector.

With the workshop, attended by 25 personnel oral surgeon from several regions in Indonesia, Rector hoped to become a forum to strengthen the capacity and prevention.

Abel Tasman Yuza, drg., Sp.BM., the Workshop Head Organize, said that the event held until Wednesday (04/20) is a collaboration between FKG Unpad, Foundation of Cleft Lip and Palate Patients (YPPCBL) with Smile Train, a nonprofit organization with concern for global cleft lip and palate patients.

“The purpose of this workshop is to raise our competence in handling cleft lip and palate. Our service for the community will be better,” said Abel during the event.

RSGM 1RSGM 2This workshop featured technology transfer by specialized professors in cleft lip and palate in FKG Unpad or at international level, namely Dr. Krishnamurthy Bonanthaya, Prof. Jyotsnaben Murthy Patel, Prof. Sunardi Mangundjaja, drg., SpBM (K), DSS, Ida Ayu Astuti, drg., SpBM (K), M. Syafrudin Hak, drg., SpBM (K), MPH, PhD, and Dr. Nuskah Sudjana, drg., SpBM.

The material for the workshop covered handling cleft lip, facial cleft, nose reconstruction post cleft lip, and orthognathic surgery. This workshop would also held direct cleft lip surgery for 20 patients conducted by the participants of the workshop.

“This workshop will be a pilot project for Indonesia Dental and Oral Hospital,” said Abel.*
