[Unpad.ac.id, 11/07/2016] In relation to increase the capacity and development of international collaboration, particularly in Southeast Asia, two Unpad lecturers was chosen to participate in the International Dean’s Course-South East Asia in Germany, on June 20 until July 1, 2016. These two Unpad lecturers are Dr. Mudiyati Rahmatunnisa, Vice Dean II of the Graduate School, and Dr. med. Setiawan as members of Rector Special Staff. They were chosen along with 28 other participants from 8 countries in Southeast Asia, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam from about 140 applicants.

This event was held in cooperation between German Academic Exchange Service (Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst – DAAD), German Rektors’ Conference, Hochschule Osnabrueck, Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung, Freie Universitaet Berlin, and regional expert assistance from Universitas Gadjah Mada, Universitas Multimedia Malaysia, and Philippine Normal University. This event in Germany was the first phase of chain of event, continued in the second phase in Manila, the Philippines on October 23-27 2016 and phase III in Yogyakarta, Indonesia on February 5-10 2017.
The phase I of International Dean’s Course activities actively studied and discussed variety of things, such as the higher education system in Germany, a comparison of higher education in the ASEAN region, governance of the university, leadership and communication in higher education, conflict management, strategic management in universities, financial management, quality assurance management, and collaboration. Furthermore, the activities of Phase II would feature learning of change management, while the third phase would feature human resource management.
To ensure objectives of training achievement, each participant was asked to create a Project Action Plan (PAP) tailored to the needs of each participant’s home institution. Dr. Mudiyati designed PAP on program delivery models for S2 and S3-based research cooperation in order to support Asup Jabar. Meanwhile Dr. med. Setiawan focused more on strengthening research commercialization at Universitas Padjadjaran toward entrepreneurial university. To develop and implement this PAP, peer learning and the assistance of a mentor who is a trainer of Indonesia, and alumni IDC previous generation coming from Malaysia and the Philippines were conducted.
“The training formula that emphasizes the outcome through the PAP is very well done in Unpad. Thus achievement of competence and capacity of participants could be proven. Similarly, formula of peer learning and mentorships will support participants if there are problems in the technical implementation. In addition, the training method is enriched by methods such as Gallery Walk, consultation sessions among participants, assignment of participants and presentation, methods of card, and visits to Freie Universitaet Berlin,” said Dr. Setiawan.
Unpad success to send these two lecturers to the event was similar with University of Malaya who also sent two of their lecturers to participate in the event. “Given the substantial benefits of participation in similar activities, the participation of Unpad lecturers, especially Dean, Vice Dean, and Head of the Department, is very important to be encouraged in the future,” said Dr. Setiawan. *
