[Unpad Media Channel] A total of 50 international university students attended the 2024 Summer Program held by Unpad’s Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science (FPIK) titled “Wave of Resilience: A Coastal Sustainability Mission”. The hybrid program ran from July 29 to August 2, 2024, and included participants from six countries, namely China, South Korea, Japan, Malaysia, Pakistan, and The Philippines.

Unpad’s Vice Rector for Academic and Student Affairs, Prof. Arief Sjamsulaksan Kartasasmita, dr., SpM(K), M.Kes., Ph.D., was present to officially begin the event. In his welcoming remarks, Prof. Arief emphasized the importance of maintaining the preservation of the coasts. The Dean of Unpad FPIK, Dr. Sc.agr. Yudi Nurul Ihsan, S.Pi., M.Si., echoed the sentiment, saying in his speech that the success of the 2024 Summer Program is a realization of Unpad and FPIK’s commitment to coastal preservation.

“Going forward, we plan to develop similar, even more innovative programs involving many contributors. We shall also continuously supervise the growing of the planted mangrove and evaluating the program,” said Prof. Yudi.

Bappenas’ Director of Marine Affairs and FIsheries, Mohamad Rahmat Mulianda, S.Pi., M.Mar., attended the event as a keynote speaker. He added that, as the country with the longest cumulative coastline, Indonesia possesses huge marine potential. However, he also addressed that there are problems faced by Indonesia’s coastal regions.

“It’s important for us to plan for strong and sustainable development on our coasts through the increasing of the public’s awareness of the importance in preserving marine conservation. With that, we will be able to build a generation who cares for the environment, and has an active role in preserving marine resource sustainability,” explained Rahmat.

As part of the 2024 Summer Program, Unpad FPIK involved the participants in contributing to coastal conservation activities by planting mangrove plants at Taman Wisata Angke, Jakarta on July 31, 2024. Through the activity, the participants got to learn about the importance of mangrove for its surrounding ecosystem in lectures delivered by Yayasan Konservasi Indonesia (The Indonesian Conservation Institute).
