[Unpad Media Channel] Dozens of participants from six countries attended the 2nd Indonesian Seas: Catalysts for Ocean Sustainability (ISCO) 2024 seminar titled “From the University to the World,” held at Bale Sawala, Unpad Rectorate Building, Jatinangor Campus, on Tuesday, September 3rd, 2024. ISCO is an international seminar organized by the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (abbreviated as FPIK) at Unpad, aimed at fostering international collaboration to achieve ocean sustainability.

“Let’s use this seminar as a platform to build engagement and collaboration. I hope you all can share new ideas and knowledge, so we can establish an academic exchange from these discussions,” said the Rector of Unpad, Prof. Rina Indiastuti.

In her opening speech, the Rector highlighted the significance of ISCO 2024 for Unpad and its partners. ISCO 2024 symbolizes Unpad’s commitment to strengthening international collaboration, specifically in marine sciences. It is expected to be a venue for developing ideas and innovations to enhance cooperation in research and education. The event was also attended by Yogi Yanuar, Assistant Deputy from the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment.

It is hoped that ISCO 2024 will produce cutting-edge research that can help address current issues, such as climate change, and enhance the reputation of the participating institutions.

Furthermore, the Dean of FPIK Unpad, Prof. Dr. sc.agr. Yudi Nurul Ihsan, discussed Unpad’s focus on sustainability and the preservation of the ocean and natural environment. Prof. Yudi emphasized the importance of ocean sustainability for everyone, stating that Unpad is committed to maintaining the sustainability and preservation of the seas for the common good.

“We realize that the global community depends on the health and quality of marine resources. The oceans cover 70% of the Earth’s surface, which is why we need to take better care of them,” explained Prof. Yudi.

He also encouraged participants to use this opportunity not only to discuss marine issues but also to build networks and establish collaborations.

The event included the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Universitas Padjadjaran and the Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IOCAS). This MoU will pave the way for further collaboration between Unpad and IOCAS in academic programs, research, and education. The document was signed by Prof. Rina Indiastuti, Rector of Unpad, and Prof. Fan Wang, Director of IOCAS. (SA)*
