[Unpad Media Channel] Universitas Padjadjaran and Pertamedika IHC announced the commencement of construction for a Cancer Hospital, set to begin in 2025. This collaboration represents the first instance of asset utilization cooperation by a public university under legal entity status (abbreviate as PTNBH). The plaque was signed by the Rector Prof. Rina Indiastuti and Dr. Lia Partakusuma on Jl. Dipati Ukur 46, Bandung, on September 11th, 2024.
“Unpad is implementing asset utilization collaboration with the private sector, where Unpad acts as the public entity and IHC as the private entity. Unpad has state land and human resources, while IHC has experience in hospital management and investment capital. Thus, we collaborate, and this model of cooperation is the first of its kind for PTNBH,” explained the Rector.
She further detailed that the land designated for the hospital is “clean and clear,” meaning it has been certified and approved by the Ministry of Finance as the landowner. The area will also be cleared of street vendors currently operating nearby.
Moreover, Dr. Lia Partakusuma emphasized the complexity of cancer as a significant health issue in Indonesia, noting the high morbidity and mortality rates. “This year, the number of cancer cases at IHC has tripled compared to last year. The most prevalent types are breast and cervical cancer, followed by lung and liver cancers,” said Dr. Lia who is also an alumnus of Unpad’s Faculty of Medicine.
Currently, Indonesia ranks eighth in Southeast Asia for cancer incidence, a pressing issue that requires collective attention due to the high costs of treatment. Initially, Unpad and Pertamedika IHC had planned to construct a hospital focusing on heart, brain, and cancer care. However, the plans have shifted to prioritize the Cancer Hospital.
“We conducted a visibility study to assess the most pressing health needs in the community. The treatment process takes a long time, with long waiting lists and insufficient facilities and personnel. It turns out that cancer remains a significant challenge in West Java, making this facility essential for the community,” explained Dr. Lia.
The planned Pertamina Unpad Cancer Hospital will feature seven floors (including a basement) and cover an area of approximately 10,000 to 12,000 square meters. The provided land measures 8,900 square meters, with hopes to commence groundbreaking activities in early 2025. (SA)*
