[Unpad Media Channel] As part of the 67th Anniversary celebrations of Universitas Padjadjaran, Unpad organized a cleft lip (cleft palate) surgery and consultation, as well as simple dental check-ups, for the academic community and the general public at Unpad Hospital Jatinangor on Saturday, August 31st, 2024.

The cleft lip surgery involved 14 participants, while the consultation and simple dental check-ups were attended by 780 people. This event is also part of the 65th Anniversary celebrations of the Faculty of Dentistry at Unpad. Present at the event were Unpad Rector Prof. Rina Indiastuti and Acting Regent of Sumedang Drs. Yudia Ramli, M.Si.

The Acting Regent Yudia Ramli emphasized that this event reflects Unpad’s commitment to providing better healthcare services to the community, especially those in need of dental care and cleft lip surgery.

“This is tangible proof of Unpad’s commitment to implementing and practicing the Tridarma of higher education, which includes community service,” said Yudia.

He noted that Unpad and the Faculty of Dentistry’s initiative in organizing this event is a valuable aid to the community, particularly in Sumedang, as dental health affects the quality of life, and cleft issues impact the functional, psychological, and social aspects of patients.

“As a local government, we are committed to continuing to support and strengthen cooperation with Unpad in various fields,” said Yudia.

The Rector of Unpad, Prof. Rina Indiastuti, stated that this event is not only part of the anniversary celebrations but also reflects Unpad’s ongoing commitment to benefiting the surrounding community, especially in Sumedang, Bandung, and West Java.

“For all the people of West Java, especially those around Unpad Hospital or the Dental and Oral Hospital in Bandung, please utilize the health services according to your needs,” said the Rector.

She also expressed appreciation to the medical staff from the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Dentistry who participated in the event, as well as to the Yayasan Pembina Penderita Celah Bibir dan Langit-langit (YPPCBL) for their collaboration.

“Let us always pray for our health. Hospitals are here to provide health services, not to cause illness. Let us continue to maintain our health,” said the Rector.

In her presentation, the Coordinator of Unpad Berbagi (Unpad Sharing), Prof. Ira Irawati, mentioned that participants in the cleft lip surgery came not only from West Java but also from Banten (Tangerang) and Central Sulawesi (Toli-Toli). Additionally, 125 medical personnel from the Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Dentistry, and Psychology were involved in the event.

“Hopefully, what we did today is useful and beneficial for the community and the Unpad academic community,” Prof. Ira hoped.

One of the cleft lip surgery patients’ family members, Suraya, learned about the surgery through social media and quickly registered her child as a participant. She expressed her gratitude for the assistance provided by Unpad’s cleft lip surgery event.

“It has been very helpful for me. I hope that this event continues in the future to help each other,” Suraya said in an interview with the Unpad Media Channel. (SA)*
