[Unpad Media Channel] The Rector of Universitas Padjadjaran , Prof. Rina Indiastuti, SE., MSIE., officially inaugurated the Tugu Makalangan (Monument), a new landmark that represents the revitalization of Unpad’s main entrance, situated along Ir. Soekarno Road in Jatinangor, Sumedang Regency. The inauguration event took place on Friday evening, October 4th, 2024, and was marked by the signing of the inscription by Rector Prof. Rina Indiastuti, SE., MSIE.
The ceremony was attended by various Unpad university and faculty leaders, staff members, and students, alongside representatives from the Board of Trustees, including Prof. Dr. Ir. Roni Kastaman, M.SIE., and the Chair of the Academic Senate, Prof. Dr. Ir. Ganjar Kurnia, DEA.
In her speech, Rector Rina Indiastuti expressed that the monument’s construction fulfills a long-held aspiration for Unpad. She extended her gratitude for the monument, which now serves as a new face for the university. The Rector hopes that the monument, located near the community, will allow Unpad to continue spreading the benefits of education and research as part of the university’s dedication to higher education’s three pillars.
“We thought it would be wonderful for Unpad’s light to be visible to the public, letting people know that Unpad is always shining and beneficial through knowledge, education, and research,” the Rector shared.
She continued, noting that the monument serves as a symbol of the vibrant spirit within Unpad’s academic community, aimed at inspiring and benefiting society. She urged the Unpad community to collectively safeguard and care for the Makalangan Monument’s presence.
“Let us hold it together, maintain and care for it, and remain enthusiastic about keeping Unpad shining with our Makalangan Monument torch. To our students in particular, we present this monument as a legacy to carry forward the spirit it embodies,” said the Rector.
Edward Henry, S.IP., MM., the Director of Facilities, Infrastructure, and Asset Management at Unpad, explained that the name “Makalangan” derives from Sundanese and signifies “ready to compete.” The monument’s components are inspired by elements of the Unpad logo. Edward expressed his hope that the monument would serve as a lasting memento for the university.
“Once again, we present this to serve as a lasting memory for many years to come,” he said.
The Tugu Makalangan stands at 14 meters tall, 4.4 meters wide, and 6 meters long. It features Kujang and Sinjang ornaments, flanking the road. The Kujang element is 12 meters high, 2.5 meters wide, and 4 meters long, while the Sinjang measures 85.5 meters in length and 90 centimeters in height. (SA)*
