[Unpad Media Channel] Universitas Padjadjaran has secured the 10th position among Indonesia’s Most Sustainable Universities in the 2024 UI GreenMetric World University Rankings. The announcement is held at Graha Sanusi Hardjadinata, Unpad, Bandung, on Tuesday, December 17th, 2024, with Unpad serving as the host of the national ranking announcement event.
“UI GreenMetric is not just about measurement and awards but also serves as a reflection for us all to strengthen collaboration, share best practices among universities, and, most importantly, build a shared commitment to creating sustainable and environmentally conscious campuses,” said the Rector of Unpad, Prof. Arief S. Kartasasmita.
Prof. Arief expressed his appreciation for the UI GreenMetric team and its initiators for their significant contributions to universities worldwide in fostering a commitment to environmental sustainability. As centers of knowledge, innovation, and social change, universities play a strategic role in providing sustainable and tangible solutions for future generations.
“We believe UI GreenMetric is an excellent and essential platform for measuring, comparing, and improving sustainability practices implemented by campuses worldwide. Universitas Padjadjaran is also committed to integrating sustainability as part of our vision to be globally beneficial,” said Prof. Arief.
Moreover in his keynote speech, the Director-General of Pollution Control and Environmental Damage at the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Ir. Sigit Reliantoro, M.Sc., emphasized that universities are not just places for thinking but spaces where concrete steps toward sustainability begin.
“Through UI GreenMetric, the legacy of environmental pioneers such as George Perkins Marsh (Columbia University, USA) and Otto Soemarwoto (Universitas Padjadjaran, Indonesia) inspires us to act more thoughtfully, wisely, and courageously to protect our fragile balance. Sustainability is not just about today but about building a world worthy of future generations,” said Sigit.
UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, initiated by Universitas Indonesia in 2010, is a ranking system for green campuses and environmental sustainability. It evaluates universities using 39 indicators across six criteria, assessing their environmental commitments and initiatives. Participation has grown from 95 universities in 35 countries in 2010 to 1,477 universities in 95 countries in 2024.
Dr. Teguh Husodo, M.Si., the coordinator of the 2024 UI GreenMetric Seminar and Awarding, stated that, alongside the award ceremony, the UI GreenMetric team also held a seminar to explain how sustainability can be implemented in higher education. The seminar covered the six criteria and ranking indicators in detail. Recordings of the entire seminar and 2024 UI GreenMetric awarding event can be rewatched on Unpad’s YouTube channel.
The event also featured virtual keynote speeches from Acting Director-General of Vocational Education Tatang Muttaqin, Ph.D., and Director of Learning and Student Affairs of the Directorate General of Higher Education, Prof. Dr. Ir. Sri Suning Kusumawardani, ST., MT. The event also welcomed UI GreenMetric Chair, Prof. Dr. Ir. Riri Fitri Sari, MM., M.Sc., and numerous university leaders from across Indonesia.
