[Unpad Media Channel] The Graduate School and the Center for Tourism Studies at Universitas Padjadjaran, in collaboration with the Cakrawala Indonesia Conservation Foundation, organized the 3rd Seagrass Voice discussion webinar, #NgeLamunSore-Sore, on Friday, February 28th, 2025. The webinar focused on the role of seagrass in supporting ecotourism and environmental sustainability in coastal areas.
Seagrass meadows are a widespread coastal ecosystem in Indonesia, playing a crucial role in maintaining environmental balance by providing habitats for various fish species and contributing to carbon absorption. However, this ecosystem remains underappreciated and faces numerous threats due to human activities and environmental pollution. This event serves as a collaborative effort between universities and stakeholders to raise awareness of the importance of seagrass conservation while also disseminating research findings on this ecosystem.
The webinar is opened by the Dean of Unpad’s Graduate School, Prof. Dr. med. Setiawan, dr., AIFM, who emphasized the importance of collaboration in supporting sustainable development and environmental conservation efforts. The keynote speaker, Dr. Donny J. Prihadi, M.Sc., CPM, Head of the Marine Fisheries Competency Testing Center and lecturer at FPIK Unpad, provided an in-depth discussion on seagrass potential for ecotourism and strategies to protect this ecosystem.
The discussion session, moderated by Kevin Muhamad Lukman, S.T., M.Env., Ph.D., the Head of Unpad’s Sustainable Tourism Research Center, explores the integration of ecotourism concepts with sustainable tourism and regenerative tourism approaches to help preserve seagrass meadows. Participants also discuss various tourism activities that could be developed within seagrass ecosystems and appropriate conservation methods to ensure their sustainability.
The discussion receives a positive response from attendees, who recognized the importance of synergy between sustainable tourism and coastal ecosystem protection. Through this webinar, it is hoped that public awareness of seagrass conservation will continue to grow, encouraging further research and collaboration to safeguard Indonesia’s coastal ecosystems.
