[Kanal Media Unpad] The Deputy Attorney General of the Republic of Indonesia, Dr. Sunarta, S.H., M.H., appreciates Universitas Padjadjaran’s successful efforts in manifesting the Decree of Minister of Education and Culture number 30 of 2020 on the Prevention and Treatment of Sexual Violence in Higher Education Institutions. This effort is expected to strengthen campus safety, leading to an even safer environment for the campus community to teach and learn.
Sunarta addressed his concerns regarding campus sexual violence in a public lecture entitled “Moral Crimes Prevention in Higher Education in the Digital Era” which was held as an opening lecture to mark the Odd Semester of the 2022/2023 Academic Year at the Faculty of Law, Unpad, on Monday (29/8/2022).
Quoted from the Faculty of Law’s webpage, Sunarta, who is also an alumnus of the Faculty of Law, said that the manifestation of the Decree of Minister of Education and Culture number 30 of 2020 is written in the Regulation of the Rector of Unpad number 8 of 2022 on the Amendment of the Regulation of the Rector of Unpad number 42 of 2021 regarding the Prevention and Handling of Sexual Violence in Universitas Padjadjaran.
Unpad has also formed the Satuan Tugas Pencegahan dan Penanganan Kekerasan Seksual (Sexual Violence Prevention and Handling Task Force). This was established through the Rector’s Decree number 3881/UN6.RKT/Kep/HK/2022 dated August 29, 2022.
Sunarta further explained that the effort to raise awareness regarding sexual violence, particularly in educational institutions, is mandatory and shared responsibility. Therefore, he asked every academician of the Faculty of Law to gather and work together to prevent sexual violence on campus and further establish gender equality.
“Prevention is better than punishment,” he stated.
Sunarta also encourages Universitas Padjadjaran to develop standard operating procedures to be the guidelines as soon as possible. This is to ensure that the prevention and treatment efforts will be delivered effectively. Providing standard operating procedures will also help the campus community in understanding sexual violence prevention.
Furthermore, the academic community is advised to be wise in using digital media as well, since this precaution is one of the efforts to prevent sexual violence in the digital era.
“The Attorney General of the Republic of Indonesia is also ready to support through legal counseling in order to increase legal awareness regarding the criminal acts against morality,” Sunarta said. (mnr)*
