[Unpad Media Channel] The 67th Anniversary of Universitas Padjadjaran was marked by the Rector’s Speech delivered by Prof. Rina Indiastuti, along with an Academic Oration by Prof. Neil Quigley, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Waikato, New Zealand. The event occurred at the Graha Sanusi Hardjadinata on the Iwa Koesoemasoemantri Campus, Bandung, on Wednesday, September 11, 2024.

In his scientific oration titled “Sustainability in Higher Education: The Impact for Society,” Prof. Neil Quigley discussed two distinct aspects of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): how the SDGs assist in shaping teaching and research programs, and the contributions needed for education and social progress in society.

“All significant research universities have research and teaching programs that support sustainability,” stated Prof. Quigley, who is also the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand

Prof. Quigley explained that sustainability within universities can encompass teaching and research programs aimed at driving behavioral change. He emphasized that sustainability involves transforming the behaviors of society, government, and the business sectors, while also fostering the development of technologies that support more sustainable resource use.

“Universities are unique in the opportunity we have through our teaching of thousands of students every year to shape the attitudes towards sustainability at the same time that we’re working on technology which assists in the actual implementation of sustainable agendas,” explained Prog. Quigley.

During the event, Unpad and the University of Waikato signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) regarding collaboration in academic and research fields. The signing was conducted by Unpad’s Rector, Prof. Rina Indiastuti, and the Rector of the University of Waikato, Prof. Neil Quigley.

In her speech, Prof. Rina discussed four main topics: a reflection on Unpad’s 67 years, highlighting achievements over the past five years in line with Unpad’s strategic plan for 2024; Unpad’s contributions to higher education; strengthening internationalization strategies to elevate Unpad’s status as a world-class university; and good governance through the application of good university governance (GUG) supported by science and technology as well as human resource integrity.

“Moving forward, Unpad will be able to make a stronger contribution to national higher education. Our goal as a public university is to contribute to the advancement of education in Indonesia,” said the Rector.

She noted that Unpad’s establishment resulted from ideas from the Sundanese people in Bandung. Since 2017, Unpad has transformed into a State University with Legal Entity status. The initial implementation faced challenges and required many adjustments, but the university has since become more adaptive and is progressing toward the vision set out in its Statute.

“I want to emphasize that a State University with Legal Entity status remains a public institution, a non-profit entity whose main task is to educate the Indonesian people, produce beneficial scientific works, and effectively utilize the autonomy it has gained, both academically and non-academically,” she added.

During the event, a book titled “Humanizing Management,” reflecting Prof. Rina’s thoughts as Unpad’s Rector from 2019 to 2024, was presented. The book was authored by Abie Besman and Dandi Supriadi (professors from the Faculty of Communication Sciences). Unpad also awarded several honors during this peak event of its Dies Natalis, including the Satya Karya Bhakti Mahaguru Award, Satya Karya Adisiswa Award, Pradja Brata Award 2024, and recognition for the best publications among professors.
