[Unpad Media Channel] The Faculty of Dentistry at Universitas Padjadjaran, in collaboration with Tokyo Dental College and Japan National Defense Medical College, organized a guest lecture on the latest advancements in forensic odontology. Under the theme “Advancing Forensic Odontology in Teaching and Research”, the lecture was held in a hybrid format at the Auditorium, 3rd Floor, Building A, FKG Unpad Campus, Sekeloa, Bandung, on Monday, October 7th, 2024.
The event featured two international speakers, namely Dr. Hidetoshi Someda from the Japan National Defense Medical College, who presented “Study on Methods for Estimating Countries and Regions by Carbon and Oxygen Isotope Ratio Analysis Using Tooth Enamel”, and Prof. Masatsugu Hashimoto from Tokyo Dental College, who discussed “Facial Identification Methods Using the Superimposition Technique”.
In her opening remarks, Dr. Sri Susilawati, drg., M.Kes., Vice Dean for Learning, Student Affairs, and Research at Unpad’s Faculty of Dentistry, highlighted the importance of international collaboration in advancing research in dentistry and forensic odontology. She also emphasized that such expert lectures foster innovative solutions to global challenges in identification and forensic odontology.
Dr. Someda detailed his research on estimating geographic origins through isotope ratio analysis in tooth enamel. His findings assist forensic investigators in identifying possible residential locations of unidentified individuals and provide new insights into migration patterns and human history.
Moreover, Prof. Hashimoto elaborated on facial superimposition methods, which involve overlaying post-mortem images with ante-mortem photographs. Through a live demonstration, he emphasized the precision of forensic odontology and discussed the challenges and advancements in facial identification techniques.
This guest lecture not only enriched participants’ knowledge but also facilitated discussions on potential innovative applications in forensic science and underscored the importance of international collaboration in research. (Nadya Yasmine Khaerunnisa/Release from FKG Unpad/SA)*
