[Unpad Media Channel] As a concrete step in supporting sustainability principles, Universitas Padjadjaran officially inaugurated its Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (3R) Waste Processing Facility (TPS 3R) Ciparanje in Jatinangor on Wednesday, July 9th, 2025. This initiative reflects Unpad’s strong commitment to becoming a green campus by fostering awareness among its academic community about the importance of sustainable waste management.

The inauguration ceremony was symbolically marked by a ribbon-cutting led by West Java Vice Governor H. Erwan Setiawan, S.E., and Unpad Rector Prof. Arief Sjamsulaksan Kartasasmita. The facility will process waste generated within the Unpad environment into useful new products.

“Alhamdulillah, today we are witnessing the inauguration of this waste processing facility at Unpad. I extend my gratitude as this initiative also demonstrates Unpad’s care for the community and environment, especially in Jatinangor,” said Vice Governor Erwan in his remarks.

Vice Governor Erwan welcomed the establishment of the TPS 3R, which is expected to help reduce waste production in and around Unpad Jatinangor. He expressed hope that the facility’s processing capacity will continue to grow and become a broader solution to West Java’s waste problems.

“Hopefully, this facility will benefit us all and expand its processing capacity in the near future so that it can reach other areas around Jatinangor and help address the waste issues in West Java,” added Erwan.

The Rector of Unpad, Prof. Arief, noted that the facility currently processes 4–6 tons of waste per day. He hopes this capacity will multiply in the future, allowing not only Unpad’s waste to be managed but also waste from surrounding communities. The Rector further explained that the launch of TPS 3R Ciparanje is part of Unpad’s commitment to its Core Academic Values and its real contribution to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by creating a cleaner and better environment.

“Hopefully, in the near future, we can significantly increase this capacity. That way, we can manage not only waste from Unpad but also waste from outside the campus, making Unpad even more beneficial to the community, especially in West Java,” stated Prof. Arief.

Also present at the event were Prof. Zahrotur Rusyda Hinduan (Vice Rector for Academic and Student Affairs),Prof. Dr. Maman Setiawan (Vice Rector for Planning, Digital Transformation, Finance, and Business Management), Prof. Rizky Abdulah (Vice Rector for Research, Partnerships, and Marketing),
along with other university and faculty leaders.

This initiative aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). (Release by Universitas Padjadjaran)
