[Unpad Media Channel] Students from Universitas Padjadjaran participating in the Student Creativity Program in Creative Works (Program Kreativitas Mahasiswa Karsa Cipta or PKM-KC) have developed an innovative prototype called MetaBand, a smartband powered by Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) technology designed to monitor cholesterol, glucose, and blood pressure levels in real-time. Integrated with a dedicated mobile application, MetaBand not only stores measurement records but also features an early detection system for metabolic syndrome, its main advantage.
This project was inspired by the growing health risks faced by individuals with metabolic syndrome, which significantly increase the likelihood of developing heart disease and diabetes. A comprehensive health monitoring system is crucial for early detection and prevention of serious complications. The team identified a gap in existing wearable health devices, which typically do not measure all metabolic syndrome indicators within a single device. MetaBand was thus developed as an integrated Internet of Things (IoT)–based solution.
The MetaBand integrates NIRS sensors, a microcontroller, and calibrated photodiodes to ensure accurate readings. Measurement results are displayed in real-time on the smartband’s screen using color indicators: green (normal), yellow (alert), and red (high). The system is designed to be user-friendly while providing practical health insights.
The MetaBand development team consists of multidisciplinary students, namely Melsya Meira Syalsabilla (Nursing) as team leader, Fahra Dina Qoyyimah (Nursing), Amar Jamaludin (Electrical Engineering), Naufal Nuha Fahreza (Electrical Engineering), and Maris Lumban Gaol (History). The project is supervised by Irkham, S.Si., M.Sc., Ph.D. and represents a tangible contribution to improving public health through accessible, non-invasive, and real-time health technology.
This innovation also supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure).
