Interpreting tends to be immediately. It is different from translation which doesn’t tend to be immediately, “said the lecturer of the English Literature, Faculty of Arts (FIB) Unpad, Rasus Budhyono, M.Hum., when speaking at the Seminar and Workshop of Professional Interpreter, Tuesday (20/05) at Bale Santika Unpad Jatinangor. The seminar and discussion of profesional interpreter is held by the Student Center of English Literature (Gemasi) FIB Unpad.

Right away, fast, and master the language are characters that the interpreters must have. In addition, interpreter always works under time pressure and has a little opportunity to correct or revise the conversation.

Interpreter is usually needed in seminar activity, presentation, conference, or the court where there is a bilingual communication. Interpreter is also needed for bilingual communication concerning the business affairs, diplomacy, liasion organizer, the court, and education.

In terms of diplomacy, the interpreter plays an important role for the development of the country. According to the Special Staff of the President as well as the interpreter of the RI President, Andre Omer Siregar, interpreter in the head of state communication plays an important role to bridge the ideas of one or more head of state in international meetings.

“The interpreter’s role is to convey ideas of state leaders that will be affected to their countries” said Andre.

Although it is not easy, interpreter is the most lucrative job. Admittedly, in 2014, Indonesia will held at least 90 international events. Thus, the needed for a translator or interpreter is also increasing.

The same thing is also conveyed by Susi Septaviana R, M.Pd., lecturer of English Education Universitas Pendidikan indonesia (UPI). According to her, many advantages are gained by an interpreter when doing their job. In addition to high-income, interpreter has the opportunity to visit places that have never visited before.

Therefore, to be the interpreter, we must understand the difficulty factors, such as: capable of multitasking, time management, strengthening of concentration and memory, expand knowledge, interpersonal skills, vocal power, and psychological aspects.

“There is no school for interpreter in Indonesia, you have to have passion and train yourself to become an interpreter,” said Rasus. *
