[Unpad.ac.id, 29/01/2016] Starting on academic year of 2016/2017, Universitas Padjadjaran will open Veterinary Study Program under Faculty of Medicine. The fulfillment of veterinary services availability in West Java has became the basis of the opening of this study program.

Rector Unpad, Prof. Tri Hanggono Achmad, said that the opening of Veterinary Study Program is mandated by the West Java Governor H. Ahmad Heryawan in order to improve the health of livestock in West Java. “At least during sacrificing animal in Eid al-Adha, the veterinarians could examinethe stock,” he said some time ago.
Furthermore, Rector explained that from universities in West Java, there is only one department of Veterinary at Faculty of Veterinary in Bogor Agricultural Institute. It is inversely proportional to the potential of cattle in West Java, considering the province as one of the largest cattle suppliers in Indonesia.
Other basis for the opening of the study program of Veterinary at Universitas Padjadjaran is the lack of personnel in some animal health center in West Java. “If there is no vet, it is difficult for us to guarantee animal health. Moreover, nowadays there are many developing exceptional human diseases that come from animals, “he explained.
Therefore the study program of Veterinary at Padjadjaran University will be opened under the Faculty of Medicine. Rector explained that this decision is based on relationship between the health of humans and animals, known as “zoonosis”, or infectious animal disease to humans and vice versa.
The lecturers in study program of Veterinary are lecturers from Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Animal Husbandry. “We have many graduate veterinarians in Animal Husbandry. Therefore they will be representing Veterinary Medicine study program, “he said.
Meanwhile, Vice Rector for Academic and Student Affairs Dr. Arry Bainus, M.A., said that capacity of Veterinary study program at Padjadjaran is 50 people.
In order for even distribution of graduates Veterinary Unpad in West Java, Rector will also provide scholarships for students. “We are preparing their scholarship. If not, future graduates will only be concentrated to open a veterinary practice in big cities, “said Rector.*
