Innovation in Solving Marine and Fisheries Problems is Needed

[unpad.ac.id, 11/10/2018] In the commemoration of the 13th Anniversary, the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPIK) Universitas Padjadjaran held the 2018 National Seminar on Fisheries and Maritime Affairs at Grha Sanusi Hardjadinata Unpad, Dipati Ukur Street no. 35 Bandung, Thursday (11/10).

The chief executive of the activity, Iis Rostini, S.Pi., M.Sc., said, the activity was held to share information related to research results and their application in the field of fisheries and marine science. The number of participants consists of 112 essay writers, who come from number of universities, research institutions, and private companies in Indonesia.

“Through this activity is expected to create innovation and meet the needs of the development of science and technology, especially in the field of fisheries and marine science,” hoped Iis.

The event was officially opened by the Unpad Vice Rector for Academic and Student Affairs, Dr. Arry Bainus. In his speech, Dr. Arry hoped that Unpad academicians can continue to uphold Unpad’s Principal Scientific Pattern “Building up Noble of Law and Environment in National Development”.

Related to this, Dr. Arry also hoped that the discussion of fisheries and marine aspects is not only about the potential of natural resources, but also about the regulation and sustainability of the environment. Currently there are still many problems related to these issues.

“On this occasion these problems should be raised by us together because we must be able to maintain our extraordinary heritage,” said Dr. Arry.

On this occasion, the Director of Research and Community Engagement of the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education (Kemenristekdikti) Prof. Ocky Karna Radjasa acted as the keynote speaker, discussing fisheries and marine research policies in supporting national competitiveness.

In his presentation, Prof. Ocky explained his various policies in increasing the quality of research in Indonesia. He said, if a university, including Unpad wants to contribute strongly in improving the nation’s competitiveness, the quality of research and community engagement needs to be improved.

“If Unpad wants to advance to contribute so as to improve the competitiveness of the nation, then research and dedication must be strengthened,” said Prof. Ocky.

Prof. Ocky also said that research in maritime was one of the priorities in the 2017-2019 National Research Program.

Besides Prof. Ocky, the event also featured speakers Head of the Observation and Sea Research Center Dr. I Nyoman Radiarta, Dean of FPIK Unpad Dr. Yudi Nurul Ihsan, and the Head of the West Java Marine and Fisheries Office, Ir. Jafar Ismail. *
