Arts Festival of Jatinangor 2012, A Token of Appreciation for Local Culture from HIMA AN FISIP

[Unpad.ac.id, 17/11/2012] Jatinangor has grown into a celebrated area for education. What’s more, more campuses have just recently been moved in to Jatinangor. Jatinangor, however, is not only famous for its campuses but also for its potentials in long established cultural pieces and arts.

As a token of appreciation for the cultural wealth that the area posseses, State Administration Department students, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) organized an event called Jatinangor Art Festival 2012 bringing the theme “For you, my Jatinangor” in Ciawi square, Jatinangor on Saturday (17/11).

The head of the organizing committee, Sen Twin Setyanto, stated that the event was held not only to appreciate the cultural pieces of Jatinangor but also to show gratitude for the support that the community in Jatinangor has been giving to the campuses.

Prominent public figures and several officials from the subdistrict office of Jatinangor participated in the event. In addition, art performances unique to Jatinangor and Sumedang, such as Kuda Renggong and Kuda Lumping, were displayed. Kuda Renggong presents a trained horse that dances beautifully to the music that traditional musicians play. As for Kuda Lumping, the tradition shows a mystical performance of a man possessed by spirit that moves and acts as if he was a horse.

Other performances were also staged, to name but a few Marching Band, Jaipong dance and Serimpi dance, Teater Hejo, as well as musical performance from Pemuda Harapan Bangsa (PHB), Bandung’s famous band.

Dr. Drs. Heru Nurasa, M.A., the head of state administration department Unpad, had high hope that such event that involves students and community members in general would be periodically organized.

“This is one good means to preserve local culture. It should be made bigger, let’s make it for West Java region instead,” said he.

The same excitement was also shown by the head of the sub district office, Bambang Rianto, who admitted that “such event has given rise to appreciation for arts and cultural pieces in Jatinangor.”
