[unpad.ac.id, 1/22/2019] The selection process for new students of Undergraduate level in 2019/2020 admissions in Unpad follows the nationally determined selection pattern. In addition to the SNMPTN (national higher education entrance examination) and SBMPTN (joint higher education entrance examination) lines, starting in 2019 Unpad will open entrance examination of Undergraduate level through independent pathway.

Unpad Rector Prof. Tri Hanggono Achmad explained, this year the SBMPTN pathway selection and independent pathway only use one test method, namely the Computer Based Writing Examination (UTBK). The implementation of UTBK will be managed by the Higher Education Entrance Test Institution (LTMPT).

When holding a press conference at the Unpad Executive Lounge room, 35 Jalan Dipati Ukur Street, Bandung, Tuesday (1/22) afternoon, the Rector said that UTBK was conducted before the SBMPTN registration period. Thus, participants register UTBK without first choosing the desired study program.

“They (the participants) just want to take part in the exam, whether they join the Exact, Social Humanities or Language group,” said the Rector.

UTBK registration is opened on March 1 to April 1 2019. While the implementation is carried out from April 13 to May 26, 2019. “Each participant is given a maximum of 2 times of chances. If She/He takes the exam in the same field (group), the highest score will be taken. “In different fields, depending on which study program She/He took at the SBMPTN,” explained the Rector.

UTBK results will be received by each participant. The results received describe all components tested. This method is set by the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education to obtain prospective students more precisely based on their abilities seen from the test results.

“For example, based on last year experience, someone wanted to enter Medicine but her/his Biology score was 0, but She/He could still enter because the total score was large. Now, it does not only depend on the total score, “He explained.

Thus, each study program in each State University will have its own measurement. This will allow prospective students to determine the appropriate study program based on the size of their potential abilities. This process that drives the implementation of UTBK is held first from the registration of the SBMPTN.

The capacity of each path is different from the quota in 2018. The Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education this year sets a minimum quota for SNMPTN of around 25%. While the minimum quota of 2019 SBMPTN is around 40%, and the independent quota is a maximum of 30% of the total capacity.

“So there was a decline in SNMPTN, there was an increase in the SBMPTN and independent pathway,” said the Rector.

Furthermore, for prospective students who are declared to pass the SNMPTN, the system will automatically reject the candidate to register for the SBMPTN or the independent pathway. This provision aims to maximize the fulfillment of the capacity determined by each State University.

Independent Pathway

The Rector explained, this year, Unpad opens a selection of regular undergraduate level admissions through the independent pathway or the Entrance Selection of Universitas Padjadjaran (SMUP). Previously, the SMUP was only opened for the selection of Applied Undergraduate programs, Undergraduate Study Programs Outside the Main Campus, and Postgraduate.

The Rector said, not all Undergraduate study programs open registration for independent pathways. The independent path will be opened especially for study programs that require additional examinations outside the UTBK results.

“This is an optimization effort of how universities can find the right students. This year each study program was given the opportunity by the Central Committee to develop additional test strategies, “said the Rector.

Some study programs at Unpad have prepared additional test material. There are forms of interviews, TOEFL tests, portfolios, Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) tests, and practicum tests. “Independent pathways are provided as part of perfecting this test pattern,” said the Rector.

In addition to regular Undergraduate degrees, this year’s independent pathway is also opened for international classes in Undergraduate programs. This international class will be opened at the Faculty of Economics and Business, Faculty of Law, and the Faculty of Pharmacy.

This international class can be attended by domestic students and foreign students. There are some basic differences with regular Undergraduate programs, such as the language of instruction in English, to curriculum standards that exceed the standards at a regular Undergraduate.

Termination of Free Medical Program

In a press conference attended by a number of media crews, the Rector explained about the tuition waiver program for doctors and specialists. Starting this year, Unpad stopped the program.

The Rector said, the main consideration for the termination of the program was the fulfillment of the needs of prospective doctors and specialists, especially to be placed in the West Java region. During the three years running, this program has recruited around 900 students of the Specialist Doctor program and 800 students of the Undergraduate of Medical Education program.

The Rector emphasized that this program is not only to eliminate the costs of education for doctors and specialists. The main objective of this program is to meet the needs of doctors and specialists in West Java area. Students must be prepared to be placed as doctors or specialists in all regions in West Java. As an appreciation, Unpad freed the student from the tuition fees.

In addition, this program is a work program of the 2015-2019 Rector. Regarding the ongoing process of electing the Unpad Rector 201-2023, the sustainability of this program policy depends entirely on the upcoming elected Rector. *
