[Unpad Media Channel] Researchers from Universitas Padjadjaran’s Pangandaran Campus (PSDKU) have begun a collaboration with the researchers of East China Normal University’s State Key Laboratory of Estuarine and Coastal Research (SKLEC). Said collaboration was initiated in order to increase their understanding, and access to research technology, in the fields of fishery and marine science.

The Director of Unpad PSDKU, Alexander M.A. Khan, Ph.D., explained that the aim of the collaboration includes, among other things, improving the quality of education and research in fishery and marine science, as well as promoting the culture of each country taking part.

“The collaboration will take the form of joint research and publications, student and staff exchange, as well as other academic activities to be carried out collectively within the agreed timeframe,” he said.

On the academic side, Unpad PSDKU has joined the Ocean Color-based Plant species identification and Carbon flux in Indo-Pacific oceans (OC-PC) Study Group, part of Integrated Marine Biosphere Research (IMBeR). The project involves 13 researchers from Indonesia, Malaysia, The Philippines, and Singapore.

Alex added that, at the beginning, the research collaboration will focus on the study of tropical fishery and marine science, specifically in the Pangandaran Regency and encompassing Indonesia on a broader scale. This will be done through the contributions of the professors at Unpad PSDKU’s Tropical Fisheries study program.

“Unpad’s selling point in the collaboration is the scientific expertise in the fields of fishery and marine science demonstrated by its researchers and professors. Tropical fisheries and marine science is a particular specialty of Unpad PSDKU in Pangandaran,” he explained.

According to him, the collaboration will significantly influence the study, development of data, and comprehensive understanding of fishery and marine phenomena in Indonesia.

“The more up-to-date data and information will be studied together so they can provide brand new perspectives about fishery and marine science and technology in Indonesia,” he added.

Alex and the Head of the Tropical Fisheries Study Program at Unpad PSDKU, Lantun Paradhita Dewanti, M.EP., attended an IMBeR conference held in November 2023. At the conference, the collaboration for research between Unpad PSDKU and East China Normal University SKLEC of tropical fisheries and marine science in Pangandaran was established.

Alex hoped that this collaboration would help to boost Unpad’s global reputation as well as provide opportunities for Unpad PSDKU academics to gain international experiences and perspectives. (arm/ICP)*
