Introducing Community Service Program, Unpad’s Institute for Research and Community Service invites intern lecturers to visit Unpad’s partner villages

[Unpad.ac.id, 7/20/2013] As reported earlier, this year Unpad is again trusted to conduct an internship programme for lecturers as ordered by the Directorate General of higher education (higher education). In order to introduce the lecturers to community service activities conducted by Unpad, they undertake a visit to partner village of Unpad in Indramayu and Kuningan Regency on Saturday-Sunday (5-6/10).

Basically, the mission is to help accomplish the purpose of higher education itself, namely teaching, research, and community service. This programme is one form of effort to accomplish that. The lecturers are taken to see and get involved in the work of Unpad in the community, “said Secretary of the LPPM Unpad Sondi Kuswayan, IR. M.S. as met during the activity.

In Indramayu Regency, the group made a visit to the village of Majasih and the village of Longok, Sliyeg District, Indramayu. In Kuningan, the group also visited the tourism village of Cibuntu.

Hopefully, this activity would help the lecturers in carrying out the mission of university, particularly in the field of community service in their respective areas and according to their academic competences, “Sondi said.

One of the locations visited was the solar cell project in the village of Majasih as one of the activities of the grant Program Competition-based Institutions (institutions for LAYOFFS) in 2010-2011. Solar cell is a power plant using solar power. Here, the main function of the solar cell is to turn the water pump to irrigate the rice fields. But in the dry season, this tool is also used to meet the needs of water in households.

Up to now, the activity is still ongoing. In addition to solar cell, there are still a number of other activities carried out in the field, most notably farming activities. In addition to helping in terms of technology, it is also often Served to motivate the population to conduct various activities to improve the quality of life of the population.

“We wanted to build and maintain a long-term relationship. So if there are any programs like this, we can help each other. That is important for the interests of the general public. Between theory and implementation are sometimes different. So lecturers don’t just in College, but should also go down to the community, “said village chief Majasih, Doni.

The same thing was also expressed by the head of Livestock Department of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry of Indramayu district, Nandang Hidayat. “Our cooperation with Padjadjaran has existed long enough. Universitas Padjadajran holds an influentialrole in Indramayu, especially in motivating our people in the field of animal husbandry and agriculture, “he said.

A lecturer of Unpad Faculty of animal husbandry, Johar Arifin, S.Pt., M.P., who also became a guide in this activity, said that the most important is how to motivate people to get ahead, rather than simply providing technical assistance or counseling.

This community service is expected to find a solution to the problems in the society, not to give rise to new social problems. Thus, we should be able to directly get involved in the society and help them improve.
