Unpad To Optimize Arjasari Campus for Vocational Education

[Unpad.ac.id, 20/01/2016] Unpad will re-optimize campus land in district Arjasari, Bandung regency. This area of 200 hectares is currently managed as a site of Research Training and Development of Agriculture (SPLPP) of Faculty of Agriculture. It is scheduled to be optimized as Unpad campus Arjasari, in addition to Dipati Ukur and Jatinangor Campus.

Rector Unpad, Prof. Tri Hanggono Achmad, said that campus Arjasari optimization is done in order to realize the concept of “Transformative Unpad Triangle”, in terms of development of three Unpad campus sites Unpad (Dipati Ukur, Jatinangor, and Arjasari) and to realize development progress through transformative education.

“In order to encourage many aspects of the downstream, it requires many vehicles we can develop as means of support,” said Rector in Development Discussion Meeting of Unpad Arjasari, Tuesday (19/01) at Campus Arjasari. This meeting was attended by leadership, Deans, and Council of Professors in Unpad.

With large land area, Arjasari campus is planned to be a vehicle for integration of academic development, environmental sustainability, and strengthening the culture. Rector said that in terms of academic development, campus Unpad campus Arjasari will be set for vocational education.

Selected vocational education is supported to prepare skilled manpower in applied fields. According to Rector, Indonesia has shortage of skilled manpower for less popular technology development. To that end, Unpad current vocational education has to be developed in order to be integrated with the current knowledge.

In relation to overall development plan in Arjasari Unpad, Prof. Dr. Ir. Mahfud Arifin, M.S., The Chair of Development Studies Unpad Arjasari explained that his team has formulated a master plan for SPLPP Arjasari 2016 – 2021. From an area of about 200 hectares, Prof. Mahfud and his team has divided the Arjasari land development into four zones.

The first zone, covering an area of 14.63 hectares, will be used for development of vocational campus and dormitories for students. This campus is targeted to accommodate approximately 33,000 students. Campus development consists of the construction of office facilities, conference hall, lecture building, and laboratories.

The second zone covered an area of 49.15 hectares and will be used for Science and Technology Park (TST). This will be the downstream space science product ranging from 16 faculties in Unpad. TST development is an implementation of targets set by the government to state universities in Indonesia.

Zone 3, said Prof. Mahfud, will be land-based agro campground area of 5.42 hectares. Here, students and visitors will not only be camping, but also invited to get to know more of agricultural activity. Caravan will be integrated with TST area.

Meanwhil, Zone 4 will be developed as a cooperative land area of 125.64 hectares. Currently, at least 480 farmers worked on the site, with land man ratio of 12 people per hectare. Later, these farmers will be included in Unpad team to work on farmland soil areas in partnership, with Universitas Padjadjaran as the stakeholders.

“We will also build Arboretum area of 18.56 hectares, where it will house the zone of rare plants,” said Prof. Mahfud.

Furthermore, Rector said that the key importance of the master plan is that there should be strong in all sector integration of science in Unpad. “We shall rely on academic base because that’s our strength,” he said. *
