[Unpad.ac.id, 16/03/2016] Global challenge in aspect of improving the quality of health care is no longer done individually. All sectors in the health field must be integrated in order to form a unified health service. This integration should begin to be implemented in the education system, especially at the university.

“The challenges of complex health problems require collaboration of the entire field of health care professionals,” said Rector of Padjadjaran University, Prof. Tri Hanggono Achmad, as speaker at “The 5th Padjadjaran International Nursing Conference” International Seminar in Grha Sanusi Hardjadinata Unpad, Jln. Dipati Ukur No. 35, Bandung.
Rector argued that global health system is currently facing a complex situation, including development of increasingly advanced technology innovation, world population that continues to increase, and the change of development pattern from MDGs to SDGs. This situation requires commitment of all parties to work together improving health services quality.
More complex situations can be seen from the number of deaths from non-communicable diseases. According to Rector, the influence of NCD’s nowadays was not only in developing countries but also in developed countries. For example, about 8.5 million people in the ASEAN region die each year due to NCD’s.
Furthermore, Rector said that integration of various modern scientific disciplines in universities health education curriculum is an effective step to meet the challenges of the complex.
On the pattern of nursing education, for example, the Rector emphasized that the curriculum applied shall not prepare graduates based on “healthcare professional”, not only as “ill care professional”.
“This will affect the graduates. The problem of health personnel is still in charge by academic, not based on the spirit of caring people,” he said.
Therefore, he proposed university to pursue transformative learning. “When we talk about health, we are not only discussing one side of nursing alone, for example, but we should also discuss other of medical areas, such as medicine, pharmacy, and psychology to other sub-sectors of science,” said Rector.
According to Rector, transformative education is globally integrated education formula that can provide immediate impact to the community. This formula would integrate different disciplines to produce a powerful influence for improvement of health services. This formula also becomes Unpad way of learning.
The international seminar was organized by Faculty of Nursing Unpad. The Chairman of the event, Dr. Yanti Hermayanti, S.Kp., M.Nm, said that this international seminar aimed to introduce variety of new scientific concepts in the field of health services from various viewpoints.
“The formula of transformative health services is needed to create a sustainable health care system,” said Yanti.
With approximately 200 participants, this international seminar participants came not only from parts of Indonesia, but also from Malaysia, the United States, Australia, Japan, India, Thailand, Singapore, and the Philippines.
This seminar was also attended by Yuti Suhartati, S.Kp., M.N, Director of Nursing Care and Medical Technicians of Indonesia Ministry of Health, and various expert speakers from Unpad, Texas Women University, Queensland University of Technology, Prince of Songkla University, National University Singapore, and Clinical Manager Central Asia and Southeast Asia.*
