To Increase Value of Corn, FTIP Unpad Holds Training for Corn Chips Production

[Unpad.ac.id, 21/10/16] Faculty of Industrial Agriculture Technology, Universitas Padjadjaran worked with Farmers Group Ciburujul Village, District Cimanggung Sumedang district to increase the value of corn as the potential of local resources through a program of science and technology. The cooperation is held as technical training in the production of corn chips in Cimanggung, Sumedang, Saturday (15/10).

For so long, the corn planted by farmers is sold in the form of seeds and mostly used as animal feed. Further processing into products that have high sales value is still low. Through science and technology program for the Community (IbM), FTIP Unpad introduced efforts to increase the added value of corn to the public.

Training IbM cornflakes production conducted by lecturers FTIP Padjadjaran University, Ir. Totok Herwanti, M.Eng (chief executive), Ir. Sudaryanto, MP., and Ahmed Thoriq, S.TP., M.Si, and assisted a number of students. Training included cornflakes technical manufacture, operation and maintenance of printing machines corn chips, corn chips and a business plan.

At the end of the activity, the team IbM provided grants of machinery and equipment production of corn chips which among others consists of cornflakes molding machine, stove, large pan, press sealer.

jagung-ftip2Corn is a crop seed and has become a national priority program of government agriculture. Corn has the potential to support the non-rice food needs because of the largest content of corn kernels are carbohydrates, as well as the potential to be used as industrial raw materials. Even in some areas such as Gorontalo and Nusa Tenggara Barat, corn is the staple food. According to BPS data in 2015, the total harvested area of corn in Indonesia reached 3,787,367 hectares with a production of 19 million tonnes and productivity of 51.78 quintals per hectare. *
