[Unpad.ac.id, 20/12/2016] In order to increase public awareness about the fish in general, and aquaculture in particular, Student Community Aquaculture (Karamba) Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPIK) Unpad in collaboration with the Parahyangan Betta Community (PBC) held yearly Padjadjaran Betta Contest. 2016 is the third year the implementation of Padjadjaran Betta Contest, and on the implementation of this third series of events combined in one large event, namely Intechnoculture.

Activities aimed at strengthening the connection among fans of betta fishes, providing understanding of the community about betta fish, and educating people early about the fish. This activity was part of a series of events that began on Modern Farming Technology Seminar on Tuesday, November 15, 2016, then continued with betta fish Coloring Contest for grade 1- 2 elementary school held at Bale Santika Badminton Court Unpad and attended by 170 students from Bandung and Jatinangor, and Betta Fish Contest held in Basketball Bale Santika Unpad on December 17-18, 2016. The contest was attended by participants from various cities in Indonesia such as Jakarta, Tangerang, Bandung, Semarang, Pontianak. Total fish Betta contestants reached 734 fishes.
“Hopefully, through this activity, Karamba FPIK Unpad can improve the understanding and public interest in the fishery in general, and aquaculture in particular, one with contests of betta fish. In addition, with this activity, indirectly we can improve the lives of farmers wheel, especially betta fish farmers,” said Chairman UKMF Karamba FPIK Padjadjaran, Sudarsa Detrik.
Lecturer and instructor of UKMF FPIK Unpad FPIK Karamba, Subhan Ujang, said the many benefits gained by holding the betta contest, including the learning process for students to organize an event related to the fishery. Among other benefits, for building cooperation with growers of ornamental fish, especially betta fish, as well as inform the public about FPIK Unpad.
Betta fish contest is expected to be an inspiration for the city of Bandung and other major cities as ornamental fish cities in Indonesia. Coupled with the planned opening of Majalengka Kertajati airport it could increase import-export of ornamental fish, especially for residents of Sumedang to increase revenue so that the welfare of society increases.
“Betta fish contest consists of 57 categories with 5 classes, namely Class Serit, Halfmoon, Plakat, Giant (Super Junior, Junior, Senior) and Baby (Serit, Halfmoon, Plakat). This winners will won Rector Unpad Throphy and money for coaching. Giving the prize awarded to the winner of champion 1, 2 and 3 for each category, the winner in each class (grand champion), and the overall winner in all categories,” Ujang Subhan said.
One resident Jatinangor, Kiki Rizki Sopiana, said that he supported these activities. He hopes the contest like this is always held every year, and if necessary commodities coupled with other fish. According to him, this activity can raise public awareness about the cultivation so as to improve the community economy Jatinangor in particular, and in general are expected to be even greater activity at the level of West Java.
