[Unpad.ac.id, 15/03/2016] One of higher education disadvantage in Indonesia is the difficulty of finding a scientific publications issued collection in each college. Therefore, application of digital based library is important to encourage dissemination of knowledge generated by the academic community as well as academics.
“The digital library is to complete the information collection of local publications that do not necessarily come from in physical library,” said Mahmudin, M.M.PD., Head of Library Unit Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), as speaker in “Repository System Development Workshop” held UPT Perpustakaan Unpad at Unpad Training Center, Bandung, Tuesday (15/03).
Mahmudin explained that collections of international scientific publications in the form of e-journal or e-book are now easily accessible by people around the world over the Internet. Instead, collection of local scientific publications is very difficult to access on the Internet. Therefore, digital library through the system must be an important repository owned by the university.
Along with the development of technology, various forms of scientific publications in the university is not only stored in the library alone, but must be disseminated to the community, both locally and internationally. Thus, the task of a librarian today is not only organizing and storing collections, but to also be able to perform transfer into a digital form.
“So that the whole world knows what we have produced in the field of science and technology and later is expected to be developed into new sciences,” he explained.
Mahmudin also explained digital library system that has been applied for 16 years at the ITB. The system contains a collection of scientific publications such as thesis, dissertations, and research reports, collections of clippings academic community, to the collection of copyright.
Unpad also has long developed a repository system. According to the Head of Unpad Academic Administration, Drs. Sudarma, M.M., the development of repository system at Padjadjaran must be realized in order to facilitate all academic activities, both within and outside Unpad.
“The library at the faculty today is still developing the system. It is our task to integrate them, “said Sudarma.
Librarians from all faculties in Unpad attended the workshop. Besides Mahmudin, this one-day workshop was also attended by other speakers: Nurul Fitria, S.T., M.M., (Head of Library and Knowledge Center Telkom University), and Miyarso Dwi Ajie, M.Ikom as Coordinator of Procurement Library Collections University of Indonesia.*
