The influence of Neuropsychology in communication process

[Unpad.ac.id, 23/10/2013] The communication activities in human occur through action potential in which the information is received visually and then transferred by the neural system to the brain, and eventually sent back to the organs for response. The process only takes split second after the information received.

The notion was discussed in the national seminar on Neuroscience in Communication Studies on Wednesday (23/10) at Grand  Preanger Hotel, Bandung. Dr. Rismiyati E. Koesma, a lecturer from Faculty of Psychology Unpad gave her presentation on the topic explaining that there are a series of neural systems taking part in interpersonal communication process. “The process is called Neuropsychology which focuses on the complicated yet rapid working process of neural systems to respond an object or information,” said she.

She then added that when the information is received, a sensory system occurs in where all senses also play a role. The system is affected by limbic system that connects the performance of brain response to the human emotion. Therefore, it determines how communication response can reflect either directly or indirectly in accordance with their emotional state.

In this system, parasympathetic and sympathetic neural systems are influenced by psychological state and environmental stimulation.”Parasympathetic system results in relaxed communication and ease in idea development, while sympathetic one tends to cause conflict in communication,” said Dr. Koesma.

Environmental stimulation also plays a role in the development of self (ego), and the dynamic of neuropsychological condition when someone enters a community. “The older they get, the more developed their self is, even though the outcomes are not always the same in each individual,” she explained.

The seminar was organized by Faculty of Communication (Fikom) Unpad as part of its 53rd Dies Natalis. Besides Dr. Koesma, Dr. Jalaludin Rakhmat, M.Sc. was also present as a key note speaker, along with other speakers from various disciplines, including dr. Erial Bahar, M.Sc., Popy Rufaidah, S.E, MBA, Ph.D., and Dr, Taufik Pasiak, dr., M.Kes., M.Pd.
